    WHAT DOES ALS MEAN?

    • ALS – Amyotrophic Lateral


    Sclerosis.
    • A disease that affects nerve
    cells in the brain and spinal
    cord.
    WHAT DOES ALS DO TO THE
    BODY?
    • Causes the progressive degeneration of the
    motor neurons which control muscle
    movements.
    • Dead motor neuron make the brain lose its
    ability to initiate and control muscle
    movement, affecting the muscles of
    voluntary muscles which could lead into
    paralysis.
    WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF
    ALS
    • 75% experience “limb onset” (difficulty
    in arm or leg activity)
    • 25% experience “bulbar onset”
    (difficulty in speaking or swallowing)
    • In later stages, lung and eye functions
    may be affected.
    WHAT CAUSES ALS?

    • 1993 scientists discover that


    mutations in genes in one
    factor.
    • 90-95% of all ALS cases, the
    disease occurs randomly,
    with no clear factors or
    WHO GETS ALS

    • 60-69 years, but younger or


    older people can also
    develop the disease.
    • About 5-10% of all ALS
    cases are inherited.
    HOW IS ALS TREATED?

    • In 1995 FDA approved that


    riluzole which is believed to
    reduce damage to motor neurons.
    This drugs prolongs survival for
    several months, but does not
    repair already-damaged motor
    neurons.
    WHAT IS THE ALS ICE BUCKET
    CHALLENGE?

    • Participants who accept the


    challenge will record
    themselves pouring a Ice of
    bucket on their head.
    • Those who will not accept the
    challenge will donate 100.
    HOW DID THE ICE BUCKET
    CHALLENGE BEGIN?

    • The video has began as early


    as 2013, with most of them
    being done just for fun.
    • July 15, 2014 Golfer Chris
    Kennedy posted a video.
    HOW MUCH HAS BEEN
    RAISED?
    • 41.8 million in donations between
    July 29 and August 21, 2014.
    • This is done by raising awareness
    of ALS.
