    • Architecture is not just the art and science of


    designing and constructing buildings but is
    more a culmination of religious, social and
    economic factors.
    • Religious heritage is not only the faiths and
    traditions passed down through the
    generations but also the magnificent artistic
    and architectural works that embody them.
    • The great temples, monuments, mosques and
    cathedrals are virtual scriptures in stone,
    records of humanity's spiritual quest and its
    impact on diverse cultures that would arise
    from the soil of faith
    Temple architecture
    • Indian temples were mostly built at places which
    could be approached by a large number of people,
    like at centers of pilgrimage, near a water source
    since water was essential for ablutions.
    • Symbolically, temple architecture is depicted
    through the elements
    – The base – earth
    – The walls – space
    – The spire – universe
    – Cosmic man – feet, body & head
    Buddhist architecture
      The shape of the stupa
    represents the Buddha, crowned
    and sitting in meditation posture
    on a lion throne. His crown is the
    top of the spire; his head is the
    square at the spire's base; his
    body is the vase shape; his legs
    are the four steps of the lower
    terrace; and the base is his
    throne.
