father of
Filipino comics?
Antonio "Tony" Velasquez (29
October 1910 – 1997) is
a Filipino illustrator regarded as
the Father of Tagalog comics and as
the pioneer and founding father of
the Philippine comics industry. He
was the creator of Kenkoy, an
“iconic Philippine comic strip
character”.
Historians attribute the creation of
the first comic strip made by a
Filipino to Jose Rizal. In the years
after the First World War (1914-
1918), an industry was born when
Tony Velasquez's most famous work,
Ang Kabalbalan ni Kenkoy,
became the first comic book in the
country published by Liwayway
magazine in 1923.
The late Filipino komiks legend Mars Ravelo
created Asia's first superheroine in 1947 named
"Varga." She first appeared in Bulaklak Magazine,
Volume 4, #17 on July 23, 1947 and quickly became
popular among its readers. Mars Ravelo wrote and
illustrated the stories, and his artistic style were
comparable to Max Fleischer Studios cartoons from
the early 20th Century.
As a human, Varga was known as the little girl
named "Narda" (Mars Ravelo based this on the
name of a boyhood playmate). In her superhuman
form, she fought against common criminals, as well
as greater forces of evil. Like the Darna of today,
Varga stood up for those who could not defend for
themselves.
Having differences with the editors
of Bulaklak Magazine in 1949, Mars
Ravelo decided to take his creation
elsewhere. Unfortunately, the
superheroine's name, "Varga," belonged
to Bulaklak Magazine. His creation's
name was changed to "Darna," which is
simply "Narda" spelled backwards. (Many
Darna fans mistakenly believe that the
second name is based "Ibong Adarna," a
bird of Philippine folklore)
The Beginnings of the Philippine Komiks Industry
Although Ace Publications dominated the Philippine komiks industry
in its early years, it did not monopolized komiks production because
other publishers began to venture into komiks publishing as well,
inspired by Ace's sucess.
The first publisher to break Ace’s monopoly in komiks publishing
was Silangan Publications. In early 1950, it published the Silangan
Komiks, the fourth komiks magazine in the Philippines,
after Halakhak Komiks (1946), Pilipino Komiks (1947),
and Tagalog Klasiks (1949). The Silangan Komiks was a few
months older than the Hiwaga Komiks.

ATED
The term illustrated novel refers to an extended
narrative with multiple images that, together with
the text, produce meaning.
Therefore, the illustrated novel is not a work
graced by a single decorated cover or frontispiece.
Yet certain novels remain intertwined with a
particular frontispiece or cover design.

Post-apocalyptic fiction is a sub-
genre of science fiction. For a novel to
be post-apocalyptic, the setting must be one
where the end of the world has already taken
place and characters are trying to survive
and start anew.
The New Weird movement is a post-
modernist take on certain kinds of literary
genre fiction. In a nutshell, it's a specific genre of
Scifi/Fantasy/Horror literature that does not
follow the conventions of derivative Sci-Fi,
Fantasy or Horror, without being an outright
parody or deconstruction.
What makes sci fi sci fi?
Science fiction is a genre of fiction in which the
stories often tell about science and technology of
the future. It is important to note that
science fiction has a relationship with the principles
of science—these stories involve partially true-
partially fictitious laws or theories of science.
