Most Common Types Of

Laboratory Samples
¿What are laboratory samples?

Laboratory samples are a collection of pieces that are used to analyze the
health and physical condition of a person. These tests can be blood, urine,
body tissue, among others. For its analysis it requires specialized
equipment and a professional to do the exams.

Through these tests, the doctor looks for abnormalities within a person's
body. Values or indicators must be within an accepted range to diagnose a
patient. There are many factors that can influence these points.
¿How is a laboratory sample made?

When a laboratory sample is taken, certain compounds or chemical reagents are

applied that will give an immediate response depending on the study. That is,
each value, test or analysis that you want to perform varies in the reagent to be
used.

We talk about studies of blood, cells, tissues, urine, feces, among others. For the
result to be 100% safe and effective, very rigorous safety standards must be met.
There are worldwide standardized methods applied to each type of sample.
Laboratory samples expelled naturally

This type of samples are characterized by the fact that they leave our body naturally
without the intervention of equipment or instruments. Here enter those that we expel
because our body requires it and others through our own stimulation.

In the case of young children or people with disabilities, they may require some extra
help to obtain the sample. They are considered painless, but some can be
uncomfortable or unpleasant. We speak of solid or liquid waste that our body
eliminates.
Examples of this type of samples
 SEMEN. To do this, the patient must stimulate his penis to ejaculate and try to get the liquid into a special
container. You cannot use lubricants or condoms. For this sample it is essential not to ejaculate 7 days in
advance.

 URINE. This type of collection is done when the patient has the urge to urinate. Instead of usually doing it
on the toilet or urinal, he does it in a container. The amount will depend on the size of the container.

 SWEAT. For this, the body is stimulated to secrete sweat. Whether it's heavy and extreme physical activity
or in a sauna-like room. The sample is taken in a container, gauze or filter paper that absorbs the liquid.
Easy to obtain laboratory samples
Examples Of This Type Of Samples

 Tissues of the female reproductive system.- Secretions in this area can be collected with a simple
swab.
 Nose and throat.- These types of samples are used to perform cultures and determine what type of
virus the patient has. To do this, a swab is taken and rubbed on the area in question. When taking the
sample in the throat there may be some anxiety on the part of the person or an induction to vomit.
 Open wounds.- We are talking about sores that are generated in the most superficial part of the skin.
In house laboratory samples
 BLOOD.- Through the skin to the vein where the blood circulates, which is considered a laboratory
sample. There is general information about the person that is used to initiate other tests or diagnose, as the
case may be.
 BIOPSIES.- The sample of internal tissue for biopsy is very common, especially when there are internal
abscesses that are difficult to evaluate. To do this, an incision is made to allow the specialist to get to the
root of the problem. once there they cut a piece of the affected area and it was extracted.
 BONE MARROW.- It is a more specialized type of biopsy and is obtained from the iliac crest located in
the hip bone or sternum. For this, the patient is sedated considering the invasion to the body that will be
done.
