LESSON 1
 INTERNET - It is network of computers that are linked
together around the world.
 INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY - it is defined as a
route for the high speed transfer of information.

WHAT IS INTERNET?
BRIEF HISTORY OF THE
INTERNET
 E-mail - This is the worldwide system of sending and receiving mail in
electronic format.
 Internet Relay Chat (IRC) - It enables you to talk to or chat to individuals
or groups of people, using aliases.
 Telnet – a remote login application that permits your computer to logon to
another computer and access it as if you were actually there.
 Gopher- It is an early text-based method for accessing documents on the
internet.
 World Wide Web (WWW) – it is system of linking documents together even
if they are on different computers and located in different countries.

INTERNET SERVICES
 Internet Protocol (IP) are sets of rules that allow for inter machine
communication on the internet.
 Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) – it is the standard means of
transmitting files written in HTML over networks. It is the main protocol of
the WWW.
 Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) – it is the standard format for sending
email messages and attached files to one or more electronic mailboxes.
 File Transfer Protocol (FTP) - It allows you to transfer files between FTP
server and a computer.
 Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) - It allows to delivery of voice
communications over IP networks by converting analog voice signals into
data.
