Present Simple &

Present progressive
Differences
Present Simple
 We use it for habits, things that are usually true or permanent
situations(always happen) , facts, feelings, states happening now
and general truths, timetables or future programmed events.

-I drink tea everyday


-I clean the house when I make a mess
- She has black eyes
-if it rains the earth gets wet
-the train leaves at 10 pm

 Present simple can be used with adverbs like: always, often,


usually, sometimes, never, …
 time expressions: every day, every week, every year, etc

 Ex. I always go to school.


 Ex. Robert plays football every day.
 She is always late for university.

NOTE: add s or es in third person

Singular Plural
Affirmative (positive) She eats rice every day. They cycle to school.
+ve You bathe every evening.
He sleeps early every
night.
Negative (not/never) She doesn’t eat every day. They don’t cycle to school.
-ve He never sleeps early. You never bathe every
morning.

Interrogative (?) Does she eat every day? Do they cycle to school?

Does he sleep early? Do you bathe every


morning?

Interrogative Does she not eat every Do they not cycle to school?

Negative Don’t you bathe every
(? -ve) Doesn’t he sleep early? morning?
Present Continuous
 We use it to show that an action is happening now, at the
moment of speaking, temporary situations, and future plans.
-I am paying attention to the teacher
-Carla is working at the restaurant for now.
-he is playing soccer this evening.

 Present continuous can be used with words like: now; at the


moment; Look!; Listen! ,right now, this week, at´present, today,
tonight, these days, nowadays, for now, etc.

 E.g. I am walking to school now.

 E.g. Listen! She is singing.



E.g. I am eating ice-cream now .

Form: am/is/are + Verb + “ing”


Present Continuous/ Progressive
Singular Plural
Affirmative (positive) She is reading now. They are cooking right
+ve now.
He’s baking a cake
tomorrow. We are listening to it
now.
Negative (not) She is not reading now. They are not cooking right
now.
-ve He’s not baking a cake
tomorrow. We aren’t listening to it
now.
Interrogative (?) Is she reading now? Are they cooking right
now?
Is he baking a cake
tomorrow? Are we listening to it now?

Interrogative Is she not reading now? Are they not cooking right
now?
Negative Isn’t he baking a cake
(? -ve) tomorrow? Aren’t we listening to it
What tense is it and why?
 She is running home.
 They are driving a car.

football.
 I go to school.
 I am drinking orange juice.
 I am making homework.
 The bike is red.
 They are playing badminton.
