The taiga biome is the largest

terrestrial biome and extends across Europe,

North America, and Asia. It is located right
below the tundra biome. The taiga biome is
also known as coniferous forest or boreal
forest. This biome typically has short, wet
summers and long, cold winters.
Types of Biomes (Taiga)

1. Closed Canopy Forest- A closed canopy forest is a dense growth

of trees in which the top branches and leaves form a ceiling, or
canopy, that light can barely penetrate to reach the forest floor.
Despite their close proximity, the branches rarely touch directly.
The limited sunlight reduces the amount of vegetation growing
under and between the mature trees, leaving the ground mostly
free of brush.
2. Lichen woodland/sparse-lichen woodland The
facies of the boreal conifer zone, situated south of
the forest tundraecotone and north of the closed
forest proper. The characteristic is that of
open woodland, with a sparse stand of conifers
set in a ground layer dominated by lichens.
3. Forest-Tundra- Tundra is the coldest of all the biomes.
Tundra comes from the Finnish word tunturi, meaning
treeless plain. It is noted for its frost-molded landscapes,
extremely low temperatures, little precipitation, poor
nutrients, and short growing seasons. Dead organic
material functions as a nutrient pool. The two major
nutrients are nitrogen and phosphorus. Nitrogen is
created by biological fixation, and phosphorus is created
by precipitation.
IMPORTANCE OF THE BIOME (TAIGA)

The Taiga is important to us mainly because it covers for 17% of

global area and we use its supply of trees for lumber manufacturers,
who make paper or musical instruments. Resin from fir trees are used
for gluing glass together and from hemlock trees are used for tanning
leather. The Taiga also supplies the homes of many animals, plants,
and some humans. It helps the environment by removing the carbon
dioxide in the air through photosynthesis and releasing oxygen
instead. Due to this factor, humans who cut down too much trees will
harm not only the biome but the whole world.
DIFFERENT DESTRUCTION (TAIGA)

Deforestation- One of the main environmental issues in the taiga

is deforestation, or cutting down trees. Unfortunately, many of
the products we use every day are a product of logging, or
harvesting trees for human use, in the taiga. Much of the wood
that fills our home, such as the beams holding it together and our
hardwood floors, come from the taiga. Paper products, such as
newsprint, also originate from trees in the taiga.
Logging- Logging and the more dangerous practice
of clear cutting, which is the stripping of large
areas of all trees, are threatening the health of the
taiga ecosystem. Trees not only provide homes for
animals, but they also are responsible for soil
integrity. Without trees, soil runoff increases and the
land becomes less productive.
Climate Change-Another environmental issue facing our
entire world not just the taiga is climate change. Climate
change is caused by global warming, an increase in global
temperature. With the frigid temperatures in the taiga, we
might think global warming would make life easier for the
animals there but animals and plants in the taiga are adapted
to thrive in a cool climate. Taiga animals are unable to
survive in warmer climates, causing endangerment and even
the possibility of extinction for many native species.
IMPACTS OF TAIGA BIOME

Negative Impact
As with many forests, the taiga biome is in danger because of deforestation.
Humans are cutting down trees by the hundreds and slowly, the taiga is
disappearing.  This is obvious a negative impact on the forest as it means many
animals lose their homes and are forced to move elsewhere.  Specifically in Russia,
a reason for the deforestation was because the Russian government needed money
and so invited logging companies to work in the taiga.  However in California, a
group called the Pacific Energy and Resource Center created the Siberian Forests
Project made to contribute more to stopping deforestation in the Siberian taiga.

Positive Impact

For example, people are making efforts to reduce the

amount of hunting in the taiga.  This ensures that the
number of species in the forest does not become
unbalanced and the animals can prosper.  There are laws
in Canada that help regulate the hunting in Canada to
ensure that the animals do not become endangered and
the forests stay safe.
Another positive impact of humans is that there is an effort to
protect the forests as a whole.  Humans see that the taiga biome
is in danger and are making efforts to keep it alive and preserve
it.  A large group working to save the taiga is the Taiga Rescue
Network made up of many NGOs and individuals.  Their goal is
to conserve and stop harmful consumption of the forests.  They
do this through educating others and researching.
what can be done to reduce the destruction of taiga &
its impact
In order to reduce the destruction of Taiga, we should reduce our use of forest
timber by reducing wood and paper consumption is the best way to
help prevent deforestation of the taiga. Wood and paper should be recycled or
reused when possible to eliminate the need for more timber. In the other hand of its
impact we can help protect the Taiga by reusing and recycling your resources.
There is also a company that is called the World Wildlife Federation, also known as
WWF. It helps protect animals and their habitats for small funds, They sell water
bottles, t-shirts, stuffed animals, and more.
