Angular Indexing Part and Functions

This document describes angular indexing and defines the parts and functions of a rotary table. It explains that angular indexing calculates divisions in degrees rather than number of divisions. It provides examples of indexing calculations for 45, 60, and 24 minutes. It then describes the key parts of a rotary table - the work table, indexing pin, clamp levers, crank handle, and base - and explains their functions in positioning and locking a workpiece.

Indexing
(Quiambao)
Angular Indexing
• Angular indexing is a method of a common indexing
process; thus it must be calculated depending with
the angular distance between divisions instead of
number of divisions
Angular Indexing
• When you must divide work into degrees or fractions of degrees
by plain indexing, remember that one turn of the index crank will
rotate a point on the circumference of the work 1/40 of a
revolution.

• Since there
are 360 in a circle, one turn of the index crank will revolve the
circumference of the work 1/40 of 360, or 9
Angular Indexing
• Angular displacement in degrees
• One complete turn of index crank turns work 1/40
of a turn;
• and in very one turn is equivalent to 360°
(360°) = 9°
40
Angular Indexing
• Angular displacement in minutes
• (number of minutes) / 540

• Angular displacement in seconds

• (number of seconds) / 32400

Examples
1. Calculate indexing for 45°
Indexing = 45 = 5 turns

2. Calculate indexing for 60°
Indexing = 60 = 6 2jsdbajfbjsa
turns
9 3 nda
3. Calculate indexing for 24’
Divide 24’/540 = 4/90
4/90 = 1/22.5

Rotary table
(Pasman)
Rotary table
• A rotary table is a precision work positioning device used in
metalworking. It enables the operator to drill or cut work at exact
intervals around a fixed (usually horizontal or vertical ) axis.
Some rotary tables allow the use of index plates for indexing
operations, and some can also be fitted with dividing plates that
enable regular work positioning at divisions for which indexing
plates are not available. A rotary fixture used in this fashion is
more appropriately called a dividing head (indexing head).
Rotary table
A rotary table can be used:
• To machine spanner flats on a bolt
• To drill equidistant holes on a circular flange
• To cut a round piece with a protruding tang
• To create large-diameter holes, via milling in a circular toolpath, on
small milling machines that don't have the power to drive large twist
drills (>0.500"/>13 mm)
Rotary table
• To mill helixes
• To cut complex curves (with proper setup)
• to cut straight lines at any angle
• to cut arcs
• with the addition of a compound table on top of the rotary table, the
user can move the center of rotation to anywhere on the part being
cut. This enables an arc to be cut at any place on the part.
• to cut circular pieces

• The indexing pin is a fast way to
find and lock onto common Clamp
angles. This rotary table has an lever
indexing detent every five
degrees of table rotation. A close
look below shows the indexing pin
not engaged and then engaged.
The indexing pin will likely be
spring loaded with a twist lock to
keep it out of the indexing slots.
