growing wild fry to brood stock in captivity
hatchery-reared
SELECTION OF BREEDERS
Female
A well distended, swollen
abdomen from which ripe eggs
can be obtained by slightly
pressing the abdomen toward the
genital papilla. Ripe eggs are
generally uniform in size and a
experienced hatchery operator
can see the nucleus as a small
dark point in the centre of the
egg.
A swollen, sometimes reddish or
rose coloured genital papilla.
SELECTION OF BREEDERS

chicken intestines

debris
Feeding Management
Feed more on animal protein but can be train to feed on
supplemental
feeds
Careful hand feeding
Avoid stress and over feeding
2-3x a day frequency of feeding
Feeding must be stopped when catfish stops showing
interest in
the feed ( controls according to appetite)
Maintenance of breeding tanks
Tanks must be disinfected to avoid disease outbreaks.
Chlorine must be used to disinfect tanks and equipments. Although
more expensive, formalin must be used.

Mechanical screening (sand filters, carbon filters, screen filters) to

remove particulate matter.

 Ozonization to eliminate pathogens

 Repaint and repair as needed

 Provide strong aeration
