CAM MOVEMENT

SIMPLE HARMONIC MOTION

If a cam moves with simple harmonic motion
• How to make it displacement diagram

• Lets assume a cam follower rises for first 150 degrees with SHM and
then dwells for next 30 degrees. It then falls for next 120 degrees and
then dwells for remaining time

• Lets assume follower length as 6 cm

1. Draw x and y axis (scale properly)
Draw a semi circle with dia 6 cm
Divide semi circle into 6 equal parts:
how many degrees should be one part?
Divide x axis into equal parts:
12 cm=360 deg then 1 cm=30 deg
Make partitions according to the question
Rise portion divided into 6 equal parts
150 degree= 5 cm
5 cm divided into 6 parts
1 part = ? cm
Label the 6 parts on both semi circle and
vertical lines
Project lines from semi circle to vertical lines
Join the dots to get SHM for rise
Now draw dwell
Repeat steps for fall
• Divide fall into 6 parts
• Extend the projected lines
Complete the displacement diagram
Now attempt the SHM for the following
• Cam follower length 10 cm
• Follower rise for first 180 degrees
• Follower falls for next 160 degrees
• It then dwells for remaining time
The end
