Sampling Distribution

A sampling distribution is a distribution that shows

the proportions or probabilities with which values
of statistics are observed when all the possible
random samples are drawn from a given
population.

Example. A population has 50 respondents.A

sample of 15 respondents are selected and
corresponding sample statistics are computed like
the mean, standard deviation , variance. Suppose
we replaced the first 15 members with another
set of 15 members and compute the same
sample statictics of this group.If the process is
repeated for several times, we will find out that
the sample statistics( mean,sd,variance) vary
from one set to another that can be classified
into random variables andσ
x
corresponding
distribution is obtained which we call then as
sampling distribution.
note: Similar to the previous probability
distribution we learned, sampling distibutions
have a mean, standard deviation and
variance.The standard deviation of the samples
is usually called the standard error.
Sampling Distribution of the
Sample Means
Mean, µx = population mean, µ
while the standard error of the sample means is
σx = σ where σ is the standard deviation

√n n is the sample size

and the variance is the square of the standard error
Example.Random sample with size 4 are drawn from
the population containing the values 14, 19,26,31,48
and 53. Find the a) mean and
b) standard error
c) variance
Solution:
a) µx = 14 + 19 + 26 + 31 + 48 + 53 = 191 = 31.83
6 6

b) To get the standard error, we need to compute first

the standard deviation, σ
σ = (14 - 31.83)2 + (19-31.83)2 + (26-31.83)2+ (31-31.83)2 +
(48-31.83)2 + (53 - 31.83)2
5

= 867.53

= 29.45
Therefore, the standard error
σx = σ = 29.45 = 14.725 = 14.73
√4 2
c) variance = (14.73)2 = 216.97
note : Standard deviation is the square root of the
variance therefore, the variance is the square of
standard error.

Example 2. Compute for the a) mean ,

b) standard error and c) variance
of samples with size,n = 3 drawn from a population
containing the values 5, 6, 8,12, and 20.
Solution:
a) mean, µx = 5 + 6 + 8 + 12 + 20 = 51 = 10.2
5 5
b)First,we solve for the standard deviation, σ
σ = (5-10.2)2 + (6-10.2)2 + (8-10.2)2 + (12-10.2)2 + (20-10.2)2
4

= 148.8 = 37.2 = 6.099 = 6.10

4
Hence, the standard error is
σx = 6.10 = 6.10 = 3.53
√3 1.73

c) σx2 = (3.53)2 =12.46

Example 3. A school has 900 SHS students . Their
average (mean) height is 68 inches with a standard
deviation of 6 inches. Suppose you draw a random
sample of 50 students ,
find the a) mean , b) standard error ,
c) variance
Solution:
Given : population mean,µ = 68 inches
standard deviation,σ = 6 inches
n = 50 students
therefore,
a) µx = 68 inches

b) σx = 6 = 6 = 0.8485 = 0.85
50 7.071

c) σx2 = (.85)2 = 0.7225

Example 3.
The average weight of 50 grade VI pupils is 52 kg with
a standard deviation of 2.5 kg. If 25 pupils are
randomly picked, find the mean , standard error and
the variance of the sample means.
Solution:
Given: µ = 52 kg
σ = 2.5 kg
n = 25

a) µx = 52 kg

b) σx = 2.5 = 2.5 = 0.5 kg

√25 5

c)σx2 = (0.5)2 = 0.25 kg
