Introduction of Cosmeceutical
 Cosmeceuticals are cosmetic products with bioactive
ingredients purported to have medical benefits. The name
is a combination of "cosmetics" and "pharmaceuticals".
 ‘Cosmeceuticals’ is fastest growing segment of the beauty
industry. Cosmeceuticals are cosmetic-pharmaceutical
products intended to improve the health and beauty of the
skin by providing a specific result, ranging from acne-
control and anti-wrinkle effects, to sun protection.
Herbs Used in Cosmetics/Cosmeceuticals
• There are numerous herbs available naturally having different uses in
cosmetic preparations for skincare, hair care and as antioxidants,
fragrant etc. Some of the important examples are as follows:
1. Skincare(Coconut oil, Sunflower oil, Jojoba oil,Olive oil, Aloevera)

2. Anti-aging(Rhodiola rosea,Carrot, Gingko,Neem)

3. Skin Protection (Calendula ,Turmeric)

4. Dandruff Treatment(Henna ,Shikakai)

5. Essential oils/ Haircare(Rose Oil, Amla, Eucalyptus oil)

6. Antioxidants(Tamarind, Vitamin C, Vitamin E)


1. Skin care
a. Coconut oil:
• Family: Arecaceae
• Botanical Name:Cocos nucifera
• Uses: Coconut oil is derived from the fruit or seed
of the coconut palm tree. It can be used easily in
liquid or solid forms and is often used in cooking
and baking. Coconut oil is excellent as a skin
moisturizer and softener.
b. Sunflower oil:

Family: Asteraceae
Botanical Name:Helianthus annuus
Uses:It is the non-volatile oil extracted from sunflower
seeds obtained from Helianthus annuus, It has
smoothing properties. A simple yet cost-effective oil,
well tried and tested for generations in a wide variety
of emulsions formulated for face and body Products.
c. Jojoba oil:

Family: simmondsiaceae
Botanical Name: Simmondsia chinenesis
Uses: Jojoba oil is easily refined to remove any odor, and is
often used in cosmetics as a moisturizer and as a carrier oil for
fragrances.
Human sebum and jojoba oil are virtually identical. Sebum
protects and moisturizes the skin and hair. It keeps skin from
looking oily and helps prevent acne.
d. Olive oil:
Family: oleaceae
Botanical name: Olea europaea
Uses: This oil is a fixed oil.
When applied to the skin, antioxidants may prevent premature aging.

e. Aloevera:
Family: liliaceae
Botanical Name: Aloe barbadensis
Uses: It is an ingredient in many cosmetics because it heals, moisturizes,
and softens skin. It provide cleansing action and provide antioxidant
activity.
2.Anti-aging
a. Rhodiola rosea:
Family: Crassulaceae
Uses: It is commonly known as golden root, roseroot. Traditional folk
medicine used R.rosea to increase physical endurance, work
productivity, longevity, resistance to high altitude sickness, and to treat
fatigue, depression, anemia and nervous system disorders. R. rosea is
rich in phenolic compounds, known to have strong antioxidant
properties.
b. Carrot:
Family: Apiaceae
Botanical name: Daucus carota
Uses:It is a valuable herb since ages as due to its richness in Vitamin A
along with other essential vitamins. Carrot seed oil is used as anti-aging.

c. Gingko:
Family: Ginkgoaceae
Botanical name: Ginkgo biloba
Uses: The leaves and nuts of the Ginkgo biloba (G. biloba) tree have
been used for thousands of years to treat various medical conditions,
including poor blood circulation, hypertension, poor memory, and
depression.In addition, it is gaining a similar reputation as an antioxidant
and anti-inflammatory agent.
d. Neem:
Family: Meliaceae
Botanical Name: Azadirachta indica
Uses: The common treatment for the dandruff is Neem as it
produces antifungal, antibacterial, pain-relieving.
Neem leaf is used for leprosy, eye disorders, bloody
nose, stomach upset, loss of appetite, skin ulcers,
diseases of the heart and blood vessels (cardiovascular
disease), fever, diabetes and liver problems. The leaf is
also used for birth control and to cause abortions
3. Skin Protection
a. Calendula:
Family: Calendulaceae
Botanical name: Calendula officinalis
Uses: It has antioxidant activity, anti- inflammatory activity and wound
healing activity.

b. Turmeric:
Family: Zingiberaceae
Botanical name: Curcuma longa
Uses: Turmeric contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory
components. These characteristics may provide glow and luster to
the skin. Turmeric may also revive your skin by bringing out
its natural glow.
4. Dandruff Treatment
a. Henna:
Family: Lythraceae
Botanical name: Lawsonia inermis
Uses: It is highly praised both for its high vitamin C content
and for the precious oil, which is extracted from its seeds and
pulp and used as a treatment for hair and scalp problems. It is
used in eye syndromes, hair loss, and children ailments etc
b. Shikakai:
Family: Leguminosae
Botanical name: Acacia concinna
Uses: The fruits of this plant are used for washing hair, for
improving hair growth, as an expectorant, emetic, and
purgative.
5. Essential oils/ Haircare
a. Amla:
Family: Phyllanthaceae
Botanical Name: Phyllanthus emblica
Uses: It strengthen the scalp and hair, reduce premature pigment loss
from hair, or greying, used for hair growth, reduce hair loss, prevent or
treat dandruff and dry scalp, prevent or treat scalp infections, like lice
infections.
b. Eucalyptus oil:
Family: Myrtaceae
Botanical name: Eucalyptus globulus
Uses: They are widely used in the preparation of inhalants, cough
syrups, ointments, toothpaste and also as pharmaceutical flavors.
6. Antioxidants
a. Tamarind:
Family: Fabaceae
Botanical name: Tamarindus indica
Uses: Tamarind have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory
properties. These can protect against diseases such as heart
disease, cancer and diabetes. The seed extract may also help
lower blood sugar, while the pulp extract may help you lose
body weight and liver disease
b. Vitamin C is one of many antioxidants that can protect against
damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals, as well as
toxic chemicals and pollutants like cigarette smoke. Free radicals can
build up and contribute to the development of health conditions such as
cancer, heart disease, and arthritis. Source of vitamin C (citrus fruit, such
as oranges and orange juice, strawberries)
