Read the text!. Are the following sentences true (T) or false (F)?
The triage nurse is often the first member of the health team that a patient meets
an accident and emergency. Not all patient arriving in A&E require emergency
treatment and this can waste healthcare staff’s precious time. The triage nurse role
is to determine the severity of the symptoms each patient presents and attribute a
priority level (associated with colour) to each patient. In this way, the most
serious cases can be treated immediately and less serious case can wait. Children
and the elderly are also given priority. The triage nurse also treats cases where a
doctor’s intervention is not required. When necessary, the triage nurse also orders
tests to be carried out before the patient sees the doctor. The doctor then has all
the information necessary to treat the patient quickly and effectively.

THE TRIAGE COLOUR-CODING SYSTEM

and black tags:

(1) red tags patients who require (2) immediate treatment for a (3) life-
threatening condition
.(4) yellow tags the condition is (5) stable for the moment, the patient not in
immediate danger of (6) death but requires treatment.
(7) green tags medical care is needed at some point after more (8) critical
cases have been treated
(9) black tags used for those who need (10) pain medication only before
death.

Nurse Good evening, Sir. Can I have your (1) name please?
Patient Hardy. Stephen Hardy.
Nurse Could you (2) spell your first name please?
Patient S-T-E-P-H-E-N
Nurse And your date of (3) birth?
Patient 24th (4) March 1976.
Nurse And what seems to be the (5) problem Mr. Hardy?
Patient I have a pain. A (6) terrible pain.
Nurse Can you tell me where the pain is?
Patient All over. It’s (7) awful. And I’ve been (8) waiting here for 20 minutes already. I’ve already
had two cups of coffee.
Nurse Can you be more (9) specific about the pain?
Patient It’s in my (10) stomach and (11) chest. The coffee here is terrible by the way.
Nurse Now, how bad is the pain on a (12) scale of 0 to 10, zero is no pain and 10 is the(13)
worst pain you can (14) imagine?
Patient 10 of course. I’ve come to (15) hospital.
Nurse And when did the pain (16) start?
Patient Well about (17) six months ago. Every time I go out for dinner I have the same problem.
Nurse Have you been to your (18) G.P. about the problem?
Patient No. Not yet. It always (19) happens at the weekend.
Nurse Did you go out for (20) dinner this evening?
Patient Yes.(21) Great meal. All you can eat for £10.00.
Nurse It’s probably some form of (22) indigestion. Can you please take a seat. A nurse will
(23) examine you as soon as possible but as you can see we are very busy tonight so
you will probably have to wait.
Patient But I’ve already waited 20 minutes! I can’t stay here all night. I want to see a doctor now!
Nurse I’m afraid that isn’t possible Mr. Hardy. There are patients who need to be seen (24)
urgently. Could you please take a seat.
Patient I’m going home! (25) Shocking service in here. I’ll go to my doctor on Monday!

Listen, complete the spaces in the text bellow!

Heartburn, or (1) gastric reflux, is a condition in which a person

experiences a burning sensation or pain (2) in the chest area but it
is not related to the(3) heart. This burning sensation is caused by
acid reflux (when the stomach’s (4) acidic content flows up and
comes into (5) contact with the walls of the esophagus). Angina
pectoris is a (6) condition that is also characterised by pain in the
chest. Angina happens when the (7) blood flow to a certain part of
the heart is decreased due to a build up of plaque. Heartburn and
angina are completely (8) different conditions. However, many
people confuse angina and heartburn because the (9) symptoms
seem (10) similar. It is very important to see a doctor who can
distinguish between the two conditions.
