INTRODUCTION
• This project IoT based smart bin is a very innovative system which will help to
keep the cities clean.
• The basic idea in this project is to design a smart Garbage detection system which
would automatically notify the officials about the current status of various garbage
bins in the city.
• A message or mail is send to the user monitoring it. The message or mail will
highlight the level of garbage collected.
ROLE OF IoT
 The Internet of things (IoT) is the network of devices that contain electronics,sensors,s/w which
allows these things to connect, and exchange data.
 It has a large role to play in future of smart cities which in turn are supposed to be environment
friendly.
 With IoT in place, it will become easier for municipal bodies to monitor the whole waste
management process in the cities.
  By implementing IoT, garbage collectors can have unique identification cards, allowing them to
record the number of hours they have worked.
 This will also help the contractors or civic bodies tally the daily work hours with the amount of
garbage collected.
 The garbage collection system in a city will become more systematic and yield better results.
MOTIVE OF THE PROJECT
PROBLEM STATEMENT
 One of the main concerns with our environment has been solid waste management.
 The detection, monitoring and management of wastes is one of the primary problems.
 The traditional way of manually monitoring the wastes in wastes bins is a cumbersome process and
utilizes more human effort, time and cost.
SOLUTION
 What our system does is, it gives real time indication of the garbage level in the trashcan at any given time.
 Using that data we can optimize waste collection routes and ultimately reduce fuel consumption. It allows
trash collectors to plan their daily/weekly pick up schedule.
Hardware/Software
• Hardware Used
Arduino Uno
ESP8266
Ultrasonic sensors
Servo Motor
Blynk Application
• Software Used
Arduino IDE
Arduino Uno
• Arduino Uno is a microcontroller board based on the Atmega328P. It has 14 digital input/output
pins (of which 6 can be used as PWM outputs), 6 analog inputs, a 16 MHz quartz crystal.
ESP8266
• The ESP8266 Wi-Fi Module is a self contained SOC with integrated TCP/IP protocol stack that
can give any microcontroller access to your Wi-Fi network.
• Each ESP8266 module comes pre-programmed with an AT command set firm ware.
AT commands of standard ESP8826
HC-SR04 ULTRASONIC SENSOR
HC-SR04 is an ultrasonic sensor which is used for measuring the distance between the top
of the lid to the top of the garbage.
 Ultrasonic sensor “HC-SR04” provides an output signal proportional to distance based on the echo.
 The sensor here generates a sound vibration in ultrasonic range upon giving a trigger, after that it waits for
the sound vibration to return.
 . As shown in figure, at first we need to initiate the sensor for measuring distance, that is a HIGH logic signal
at trigger pin of sensor for more than 10uS, after that a sound vibration is sent by sensor, after a echo, the
sensor provides a signal at the output pin whose width is proportional to distance between source and
obstacle.
Servo Motor
• A servo motor is an electrical device which can push or rotate an object with great precision.
• We can get a very high torque servo motor in a small and light weight packages.
• The position of a servo motor is decided by electrical pulse and its circuitry is placed beside the motor.
 In the project, servo motor is used to open the Lid of the bin whenever someone is putting some
trash in it.
 IR sensor is installed in the bin which sense the object or the hand in front of it and helps in opening
the lid.
 Blynk app is used to monitor the collection of trash in the bin. It provides a notification whenever
the trash has to be removed.
METHODOLOGY:
 An ultrasonic sensor will be placed on the interior side of the lid, the one facing the solid
waste. As trash increases, the distance between the ultrasonic and the trash decreases. This
live data will be sent at our microcontroller.
 Microcontroller then processes the data sends to Blynk with the help of Wi-F- module.
 Blynk is an Android app for monitoring sensor or control electrical devices via Bluetooth,
local Wi-Fi or internet and Control internet of things server-Blynk data monitoring.
APPLICATION OF THE PROJECT
 It can be used by Municipal Corporation in making the cities cleans.
 It is very difficult for them to monitor all the garbage placed across the city so
through this system the process can be easy.
 If the city is clean, diseases can be prevented from spreading.
 It can also be used at low scale like in colony or society where the filling of
garbage is monitored.
 A step toward making a smart city.
