INTRODUCTION:
What is composite ?
Composite material which is produced from two or more constituent
materials. These are have notably dissimilar chemical or physical
properties and are merged to a create a material with properties unlike
the individual elements. With in the finished structure , the individual
elements remain separate, and distinct, distinguishing composites from
mixtures and solid solutions
Why composite materials are needed?

The primary reason for using composite material is its specific weight and
specific stiffness and strength
For eg:
carbon- fiber reinforced composite can be five times stronger than 1020
grade steel while having only one fifth of the weight.
Classification based on matrix material

 Metal
matrix composites
Ceramic matrix composites
Polymer matrix composites

Compare with all other matrix composites, metal

matrix composites is most commonly used matrix in
engineering applications like aerospace and
automative industries due to its strength and
stifness .
Advantages of metal matrix composities:
Higher strength –to- density ratios
Higher stiffness-to-density ratios
Better fatigue resistance
Better elevated temperature properties.-higher strength
lower creep rate.
Lower coefficient of thermal expansion
Wear resistance
Classification of metal matrix composities:

Aluminum based metal matrix composities

Titanium based metal matrix composities
Magnesium based metal matrix composities
Ferrous based metal matrix composities

Advantages of Aluminum based metal matrix composities

Aluminum metal matrix composites are gaining wide
spread acceptance for automobile, aerospace and
many other industrial applications because of their
essential properties such as high strength, low density,
good wear resistance compared to any other metal
matrix composites.
Aluminium 6061 Alloy
6061 is a precipitation-hardened aluminium alloy, containing magnesium and silicon as its major alloying elements.
Originally called "Alloy 61S", it was developed in 1935. It has good mechanical properties, exhibits good weldability,
and is very commonly extruded.

Advantages of Aluminim 6061

This alloy features medium to high strength. It also has good corrosion resistance, weldability, workability,
and machinability. Its strength and resistance to corrosion are improved through tempering.

Its high corrosion resistance and good formability make it one of most joinable alloys.

Methods of manufacturing aluminum metal matrix
composities:

Stir casting process

Spark plasma sintering process
 squeeze casting process
Liquid infiltration
Stir casting process
Stir casting method is most commonly used fabrication for
preparing aluminum metal matrix composites and it is
most economical and available method.
STIR CASTING PROCESS:
• In a stir casting process, usually the particulate reinforcement is distributed into the aluminium
melt by mechanical stirring.
• In this process, first the matrix material is heated to above its liquiduos temperature .The melt is
then cooled down to temperature between the liquidus and solidus points to a semi solid state.
• at this condition the preheated reinforcement particles are added and mixed.

• PARAMETERS:
• Stirring speed : 200 to 400rpm
• Temperature : 630C
• Time : 10min @ 100rpm

• SPECIFICATIONS:
• Power of motor :0.5HP
• Stirrer material : high carbon steel

conclusion
Finally we concluded that composite matrix materials
should give the best properties. Generally aluminium alloy
is used in composite materials and aluminium is the good
conductor of heat and electricity that is the reason we use
in aeroplanes …..etc
Aluminium composites panels are very light comparing to
other composites materials.Aluminium is a material that is
categorized as a light weight material which makes it
perfect for cladding systems. In comparson with steel,
aluminium is 66% lighter which makes it a perfect suitable
alternative
