Who are CASA and what do they do?
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is an organisation run by the
government that manages the Australian aviation safety. They license pilots and
maintain safety and regulations within all registered aircrafts. Their main goal is to
prevent casualties or problems within the aerial aircraft community and maintain
the vision of safe skies for all environments. CASA maintains this thought of
serenity within the skies by applying an efficient aviation safety regulatory system
to be collaborated positively on for the aviation community.
9 Main Rules to consider when flying drones for
Recreational Use in Australia
1. Drones must only be flown during daylight times and within the visual line of sight.
2. Drones are not permitted to fly above 120 metres (400ft) above ground.
3. Drones must be kept 30 metres away from other people
4. Drones are not allowed to fly near an area during an emergency operation or if it concerns
or affects public safety. This can include car crashes, fire, search and rescue or police
operations.
5. Only one drone can be flown at a time.
6. Drones cannot be flown above people at any occasion.
7. If the drone has a weight more than 100g, it must be kept 5.5km away from controlled
aerodromes. This only applies if the aircraft is being operated to and from the aerodrome.
8. Do not operate the drone to purposely create hazards to person, property or another
aircraft.
9. Personal privacy should be respected at all times. This includes recording or
photographing people without their consent. This breaches state laws of privacy.
Two Considerations to legally fly drones
commercially or for economic gain in Australia
You must either be certified with a pilot license for remote control vehicles or
controlling a drone that has a weight under 2 kilograms. It depends on the
technology and type of drone as well.
Safety Considerations with flying the tello drone in
classrooms
Drones should be flown away from the presence of people to prevent accidents or
injuries. In a classroom there is a space restriction as well as a flying limit to how
large or tall the room is. People should keep at least 5 metres away from the tello
drones and should be in control at all times. Fingers and hair should also be kept
away from the drone’s blades to prevent injuries and tangling of hair. People with
longer hair should tie it back behind them with a hairband and fingers should be
kept nowhere near the drone blades. The tello drone should always be in control.
To prevent loss of control the drone should be kept in a view of sight 24/7 when
the drone is flying in the air. The drone should also not journey too far from the
person controlling it’s flight direction pathway.
Advantages / Disadvantages of the use of drones
both recreationally and commercially.
There are disadvantages and advantages that should be taken into consideration with the use of drones both recreationally
and commercially. With the rapid increase in production and development of such technology, if placed in the wrong hands,
could lead to the downfall of society. However, not all drones have to be used for fighting and can be handled by
construction companies. Drones can be used to create rope bridges through coding or remotely controlled. However,
drones are most commonly popular for live streaming where a drone can be flown to a event to record and video whatever
was scheduled outside of the house. Images captured by the drone’s camera can also be sent to streaming sites and
social media networks to enhance their social media status and popularity. Drones are also being described as
advantageous for transportation corporations and online retail services that provide specific transportation through drone
technology. Disadvantages of drone technology include having a shorter lifespan. Even though they are extremely
convenient, their battery life runs out quicker than most cameras. They are also vulnerable to wild animal attacks by birds
or aerial animals. This results in the failure of the drones from attacks or capture by the wildlife. Drones can also be used to
spy on other people without their legal consent. This can include illegal photography and recording of people in their own
property. If the drone was launched into the atmosphere, the loud propeller sounds are masked. Drones have also been
recently equipped with arsenals and guns to fight against terrorists. However, these drones can easily be hacked or
accidentally mistake a person as a threat, firing their ammunition onto the innocent bystander.
