AIRCRAFT PRIMARY AND

SECONDARY
FLIGHT CONTROLS

BSAEE 2-10
PRESENTED BY : CASTRO, MICHAEL ANGELO B.
VIRAY, MARTIN GABRIEL A.
Aircraft is controlled
during takeoff, flight,
and landing. They are
usually divided into two
WHAT ARE major groups :
primary or main flight
PRIMARY AND control surfaces and
secondary or auxiliary
SECONDARY control surfaces.

THE PLANE'S SIDE-TO-SIDE
MOVEMENTS
RUDDER
THE RUDDER IS A PRIMARY
FLIGHT CONTROL SURFACE
WHICH CONTROLS ROTATION
ABOUT THE VERTICAL AXIS
OF AN AIRCRAFT. THIS
MOVEMENT IS REFERRED TO
AS "YAW". THE RUDDER IS A
MOVABLE SURFACE THAT IS
MOUNTED ON THE TRAILING
EDGE OF THE VERTICAL
STABILIZER OR FIN.
SECONDARY FLIGHT CONTROLS ARE INTENDED TO
IMPROVE THE AIRCRAFT PERFORMANCE
CHARACTERISTICS OR TO RELIEVE EXCESSIVE CONTROL
LOADING, AND CONSIST OF HIGH LIFT DEVICES SUCH
AS SLATS AND FLAPS AS WELL AS FLIGHT
SPOILERS AND TRIM SYSTEMS.

WHAT ARE SECONDARY FLIGHT CONTROLS ?

SECONDARY FLIGHT CONTROLS ARE

NOT NECESSARILY ON EVERY TYPE OF
AIRCRAFT. THEY PROVIDE SECONDARY
AERODYNAMIC EFFECTS THAT CAN
HELP THE MANUEVERABILITY OF THE
AIRCRAFT SOME OF WHICH MAY
INCREASE OR DECREASE DRAG AND
LIFT TO SPECIFIC AXES
FLAPS
FLAPS ARE A
HIGH LIFT DEVICE
 CONSISTING OF A HINGED
PANEL OR PANELS
MOUNTED ON THE
TRAILING EDGE OF THE
WING. WHEN EXTENDED,
THEY INCREASE THE
CAMBER AND, IN MOST
CASES, THE CHORD AND
SURFACE AREA OF THE
WING RESULTING IN AN
INCREASE OF BOTH LIFT
 AND DRAG AND A
REDUCTION OF THE
STALL SPEED.

CONTROLS THAT DECREASES
THE LIFT OF AN AIRCRAFT.
RETRACTING SPOILERS MAY
ACT AS AIR BRAKES WHEN IN
GROUND OR IN FLIGHT
SLATS
SLATS ARE EXTENDABLE, HIGH
LIFT DEVICES ON THE LEADING
EDGE OF THE WINGS OF SOME
FIXED WING AIRCRAFT. THEIR
PURPOSE IS TO INCREASE LIFT
DURING LOW SPEEDS AND
PROVIDE GREATER CONTROL ON
FINAL APPROACH
SLOTS
IN CONTRAST TO SLATS, SLOTS ARE SPACES IN
WHICH AIR COULD PASS THROUGH AND HELPS
THE AIRCRAFT TO DECREASE ITS STALLING
SPEED
IN AN EVENT THAT THE AIRCRAFT PRODUCES
TOO MUCH VELOCITY, AIR BRAKES OR SPEED
BRAKES ARE A TYPE OF SECONDARY FLIGHT
CONTROL SURFACE USED ON AN AIRCRAFT TO
INCREASE THE DRAG ON THE AIRCRAFT AND
REDUCE AIR SPEED AVOIDING UNECESSARY
SPEED AND MAINTAIN BETTER CONTROL.
