REVIEW: The Use of Subordinating Conjunctions in Sentences
 Subordinating conjunctions are one of the three types of
conjunctions.
 Subordinating conjunctions join an independent to a dependent
clause.
 Subordinating conjunctions help to make sure that our sentences
are coherent, the connections of ideas is clear and easy to
follow.
 Use the following subordinating conjunctions in a sentence.

 1. because
 2. as well as
 3. even though
 4. before
5 unless
1. because

-a subordinating conjunction used to express


a cause and effect relationship.

Ex. I went to bed early, because my class


tomorrow will start at 8:00 a.m.
2. as well was

-a subordinating conjunction used to point


out a comparison or to join similar ideas in a
sentence.

Ex. I prepared my modules, as well as my


notebooks and pens to make note-taking
easier during my classes.
3. even though

a subordinating conjunction used to state


contrasting ideas in a sentence.

Ex. Our teacher is doing her best to teach us


in our online classes, even though she is used
in having face-to-face classes.
4. before

-a subordinating conjunction used to


properly sequence the occurrence of two
actions.

Ex. I went to school and attended face-to-face


classes, before the pandemic forced everyone
to remain at home.
5. unless

-a subordinating conjunction used to note a


condition.

Ex. Unless a vaccine is made available to


everyone, we cannot safely go outside and
return to our classroom.
In today’s lesson we will:

 Determine what coordinating conjunctions and their


purposes are
 Identify the appropriate conjunction in sentences
 Compose coherent sentences with appropriate coordinating
conjunctions.
 Coordinating Conjunction
– joins two sentences or clauses.
 REMEMBER this acronym: FANBOYS
 F- for – is used to show reason or purpose
Ex. He put on a sweater, for it was cold outside.
 A- and – used to add ideas to sentences.
Ex. I am tired, and I don’t like to go.
 N- nor- means also not. It is used to show actions or options that are not possible in the sentence.
Ex. They were not participating in the contest, nor joining the campaign.
 B- but – it is used to show contrast of ideas.
POSITIVE NEGATIVE
Ex. I studied thoroughly for the exam, but I failed the test.
 O- or – it is used to show alternative or choice
Ex. You must submit your project now, or I will give you a failing grade.
 Y- yet – it introduces contrasting ideas. (It is the same as but)
POSITIVE NEGATIVE
Ex. Sheila always read grammar books, yet she failed the grammar part of the exam.
 S- so – it indicates result, effect or consequence.
Ex. I need to install a camera on my computer, so I can use it for online classes.
ACTIVITY: Combine the sentences by placing a comma before the correct
coordinating conjunction.

1. Ana is friendly. She is smart, too.


2. The family is planning to go on a trip. They chose the places they want to visit.
3. There is no food in the fridge. There is no food in the cupboard.
4. I was about to eat the leftover cake. Somebody had eaten my slice.
5. The family left the house early. They do not want to get stuck in possible heavy
traffic.
