FANBOYS is a mnemonic for
remembering seven common
coordinating conjunctions. These are
seven crucial words that are used often
in everyday English and which allow us
to join together two ideas in a sentence.
How is coordinating
conjunction used?
For-
ex. He went to the store for he needed
some groceries.
used to explain the reason or purpose for
something.
And –
ex. I like coffee and she prefers tea.
used to add or connect similar ideas or
elements.
Nor-
ex. Neither Jane nor Riri attended the
rehearsal today.
Used to connect negative alternatives.

But-
ex. I wanted to go to the party but I had to
work.
Used to introduce a contrast or exception.
Or-
ex. do you want pizza or pasta for
dinner?
Used to present alternatives or
choices.
Yet-
ex. she studied hard yet she didn’t
perform well on the test.
Used to express a contrast or
unexpected result.
So-
ex. it was raining so I stayed
indoors.

Used to indicate a
consequence or result.
