WHAT IS TABLE TENNIS?

• also known as ping-pong and whiff-whaff


• is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight
ball
• back and forth across a table using small rackets.
• the game takes place on a hard table divided by a net.

• invented in England in the early days of the 20th


century

• Fédération Internationale de Tennis de Table


(International Table Tennis Federation)
- was founded in 1926, the founding members
being England, Sweden, Hungary, India, Denmark,
Germany, Czechoslovakia, Austria, and Wales.

HOW TO PLAY THE GAME?

• each game being won by the player who first reaches


11 points or who, after 10 points each, wins two clear
points ahead
•  A point is scored when the server fails to make a
good service, when either player fails to make a good
return

(e.g., touches the playing surface with a free hand
while the ball is in play).

• Service changes hands after every two points until


10-all is reached, when it changes after every
subsequent point.

SERVICE
• The serve is made from behind the end of the
table, the server tossing the ball upward from
the palm of the free hand and striking it as it
descends so that it first bounces on the server’s
own court and then, passing over the net,
bounces on the opponent’s court.

RECEIVE

• The return of serve is regarded as the second


most important table tennis stroke because it’s
the first opportunity for you as the receiver to
play the ball.
• In preparing to return the service, you should
take up the ready position.

HOW TO PLAY THE GAME?

Double Player
• Double serves must go right court to right court
The serve must bounce in the server’s right court, and
receiver’s right court.
(Note: landing on center line is fair)
• Doubles partners switch places after team serves
twice.

SCORING SYSTEM
• A point is won by a player when the opponent
cannot hit the ball with a racket over the net and
onto the other side of the table.
• A game is won by being the first player to win 11
points, and be at least 2 points ahead of his or her
opponent.If both players have won 10 points, then
the first player to get a 2 point lead wins the game.
• A match is the best of 5 games.

WHAT IS BADMINTON?

• game that originated in England


• court or lawn game played with lightweight rackets and a 
shuttlecock. 
• sport played indoors on a court by two opposing players
(singles) or two opposing pairs of players (doubles), in which
a shuttlecock is batted over a net and the competitions are
presided by an umpire
BADMINTON HISTORY
• The game is named for Badminton, the country estate of the dukes of
Beaufort in Gloucestershire, England, where it was first played about 1873
• Badminton is derived directly from poona, which was played by
British army officers stationed in India in the 1860s
• Poona is the descendent of a children's game called battledore
and shuttlecock

• The first unofficial all-England badminton championships for
men were held in 1899
•  The first badminton tournament for women was arranged the
next year
• The BWF’s first world championships were held in 1977
• Badminton first appeared in the Olympic Games as a
demonstration sport in 1972
HOW TO PLAY THE GAME?

SINGLES
• The server starts from the RIGHT service court, and will serve
from that side every time they have an EVEN amount of points.
A player serves from the LEFT every time they have an ODD
amount of points.
• Each player will retain serve for as long as they keep winning
points.
• If the receiver wins a rally, the receiver scores a point and
becomes the new server.
HOW TO PLAY THE GAME?
DOUBLES
• the server will start on the right-hand side and keep serving, while
alternating sides with their team-mate, so long as they keep
winning points.
• If the receiving side takes the point, they assume serve. Going
forward, the player who did not initially serve for each team will
only assume the service once their side has won a point as the
receiving side.
Note: In a doubles match between A & B against C & D.
A & B won the toss and decided to serve. A to serve to C.
A shall be initial serves while C shall be the initial receiver.
 
BADMINTON SCORING SYSTEM
• All singles and doubles matches are the best of-three
games. The first side to 21 points wins a game.
• A point is scored on every serve and awarded to
whichever side wins the rally. The winning side gets the
next serve.
• If the score is 20-20, a side must win by two clear
points to win the game. If it reaches 29-29, the first to get
their 30th point wins.
EQUIPMENT
• The NET is 760mm in depth and a minimum of 6.1m wide.
• The top of the netfrom the surface of the court is 1.524m at
the centre
of the court and
1.55m over the side
lines for doubles.
BADMINTON RACKET
- consist of stringed hitting surface attached to a thin shaft
and a handle. 
- must have a flat face, with a uniform pattern of overlapping
strings.

SHUTTLE
- Also known as birdies
- The shuttle should weight
about .16 to .19 oz
Court dimensions

SINGLES
- 13.4m long and 5.18m wide
- lines marking out the court are easily distinguishable and
coloured white or yellow. The lines are 40mm wide.
- back boundary lines also become the long service lines 

DOUBLES
- 13.4m long and 6.1m wide
- For doubles, the whole court is used.
