WHAT DO BEANS,

TOMATOES,CUCUMBERS, AND OKRA

HAVE IN COMMON?

ALL OF THESE ARE CONTAINING SEEDS

SEEDS
• Seeds are DIVERSE as the plants they produce.

• Function- is to PROTECT the embryo it

contains.

• Seed Plants have an advantage from seedless

plants is seeds can remain DORMANT.
GYMNOSPERM AND ANGIOSPERM
• GYMNOSPERM
-the oldest surviving seeds plants
on Earth (Dry Permian Period)
- Naked seeds.
- 700 species.
GYMNOSPERM AND ANGIOSPERM
• ANGIOSPERMS
-Flowering plants
-Crastaceus period
-Monocot and Dicot.
-Both seeds contains leaf like structure
that is part of the plant embryo.
PARTS OF THE
SEEDS
PARTS OF THE
SEEDS AND FUNCTIONS.
• 1. Seed coat:
It is the outer brownish layer of the grain. In
this, seed and fruit wall are fused together.
PARTS OF THE
SEEDS AND FUNCTIONS.
• 2. Endosperm:
It comprises the major part of grain and is filled
with reserve food.
It is composed of two regions:
(a) Outer single layered aleurone(protein stored as
granules in the cells of plant seeds.) layer mainly
made up of aleurone proteins.
(b) Inner starchy endosperm. It is separated from
embryo by a layer called epithelium.
PARTS OF THE
SEEDS AND FUNCTIONS.
• Embryo:
It contains a single lateral cotyledon called
scutellum and embryo axis with plumule and
radicle are at its two ends. Root cap protects the
tip of radicle. Radicle is surrounded by a
protective sheath called coleorhiza. Plumule is
also protected by a covered sheath known as
coleoptile.(Coleoptile is the sterile protective
covering of the plumule).
PARTS OF THE
SEEDS AND FUNCTIONS.
• Cotyledon
-The cotyledon, or seed leaf, absorbs the food in
the endorsperm and transports it to the
embryo.
-Monocot and Dicot.
-the seed leaves
• Radicle
- grows into the primary root.
PARTS OF THE
SEEDS AND FUNCTIONS.
• Epicotyl
-the stem from which everything grows
• Hypocotyl
-what will become the roots of a plants.
Seed Germination
Seed Germination
• Seed begins to grow in the process of Seed
Germination.
• Seed uses energy from the food stored in the
cotyledons or endosperm.
• The Embryo grows, split the seed coat.
Seed Germination
• The two environmental condition affect the
germination:
-water availability.
-temperature.
PRIMARY GROWTH
• Primary growth occurs in all plants.
• The plants grow taller and roots grow longer.
• Growing Region: Apical Meristems.
SECONDARY GROWTH
• Produce by the cell division in meristem.
• Lateral Meristem- located within the parallel
to the side of roots and stem.
TWO COMMON TYPES OF LATERAL
MERISTEM.
 VASCULAR CAMBIUM
-located between the xylem and phloem.
 CORK CAMBIUM
-located between the phloem and epidermis.
