BRANDON SANDERSON'S

COSMERE AS OF 11/2/21

PRESENTATION BY NATALIE ANDERSON

WHAT IS THE COSMERE?
The cosmere is a fictional universe that contains many of
Brandon Sanderson’s adult fiction. These stories have the
same mythology, operate on the same principles of magic,
and even have some characters that travel across
worlds(See Hoid). Some of the books/series in the
Cosmere include the Stormlight Archive, Mistborn,
Warbreaker, Elantris, and a ton of short stories.
A common comparison is the Marvel Cinematic Universe,
if there were no Avengers movies. The characters all live
in the universe, and some characters show up throughout
the books, but there will not be an Avengers-style meet up
where different sets of characters band together against a
common enemy.
However, you do not need to know anything about the
Cosmere to enjoy the stories contained in it.

VOCABULARY AND THINGS TO KNOW
• Perpendicularity- A sort of ‘portal’ that allows people to travel from one planet to the other. Usually requires presence of a Shard
• Shards- Effectively gods; magic comes from their power, or Investiture.
• Investiture- The energy that powers the various magic systems
• Adonalsium- The power of creation; was broken to create Shards
• Realmatic Theory- The structure of the Cosmere, comprised of three realms
• Physical- The normal world, what exists in the moment
• Cognitive- How an object or person sees itself
• Spiritual- The idealized version of an object or person
• Cosmere- A fictional universe that contains several books and series
• Worldhopping- Fairly self-explanatory; the ability to move from world to world in the Physical Realm. Requires either use of a
Perpendicularity or some other form of Investiture
• Sliver- A human that had held the majority of the power of a Shard but no longer does
• Vessel- Someone who is currently holding the power of a Shard
• Splinter- A piece of Adonalsium that is not held by a human. The opposite of a Sliver or Vessel
• RAFO- An acronym meaning ‘read and find out.’ Used by Brandon Sanderson when an answer to a fan-posed question could include
spoilers
• Koloss Head Munching Day- A Scadrian holiday celebrated by fans on December 19th, marking Brandon Sanderson’s birthday

ROSHARAN SYSTEM
• Roshar is system, planet, and continent
• All animals are basically crabs, and all birds are chickens
• Also, there are hightstorms- basically weekly hurricanes that blow across the
continent(which means pretty much no dirt)
• And little fire; gems charged by the highstorms are used for light and currency
• And Pokémon! Not really. They’re called spren
• Shards(more about these later) include Honor, Cultivation, and Odium
• Humanoid species include humans, Parshendi, and parshmen
• Investiture is accessed through
• Surgebinding
• Bonding with spren gives the person certain powers, depending on the type of spren. Comes from
Honor
• Voidbinding
• Not much is known about Voidbinding, but it is to Odium as Surgebinding is to Honor
• Old Magic
• Grants a unique ability and a unique curse by seeking the ‘Nightwatcher’

• And there are ten ‘angels,’ called Heralds

• Each book in the series has a ‘main character,’ which really means the character with the
most flashbacks

somewhere and it’s really neato
• Lots of mountains and a singular jungle and at least one sea
• Investiture of the Shard Endowment
• Everyone has one Breath, but you can give it away and become a drab

looking at them but otherwise they’re fine
• With certain numbers of Breaths, you can do some cool stuff
• Two main countries
• Hallandren
• Color color color
• Jungle
