CARE STRUCTURE

NAIL
STRUCTURE
The nail structure is divided into
eight parts: lunula, cuticle, free
edge, matrix, nail bed, nail wall,
nail plate, and nail fold. Each of YOUR
these eight components has a
specific function, and if a LOGO
component of the nail structure is
disrupted, the nail can look
abnormal.
01 NAIL FOLDS
The nail fold is the tissue that
encloses the nail matrix at the root
of the nail. It attaches the nail to the
rest of the skin through the
protective cuticle.
02 NAIL PLATE
The nail plate (corpus unguis) is the
hard part of the nail, made of
translucent keratin protein. Several
layers of dead, compacted cells cause
the nail to be strong but flexible. Its
(transverse) shape is determined by
the form of the underlying bone.
03 NAIL WALL
The nail wall (vallum unguis) is the cutaneous
fold overlapping the sides and proximal end of
the nail. The lateral margin (margo lateralis)
lies beneath the nail wall on the sides of the
nail, and the nail groove or fold (sulcus
matricis unguis) are the cutaneous slits into
which the lateral margins are embedded.
04 NAIL BED
The nail bed is the skin beneath the nail plate.
Like all skin, it is made of two types of tissues:
the deeper dermis, the living tissue which
includes capillaries and glands, and the
epidermis, the layer just beneath the nail plate,
which moves toward the finger tip with the
plate.
05 NAIL MATRIX
The nail matrix is the area where your
fingernails and toenails start to grow. The
matrix creates new skin cells, which pushes
out the old, dead skin cells to make your
nails. As a result, injuries to the nail bed or
disorders that affect the matrix can affect
your nail growth.
06 FREE EDGE
The nail plate leaves the end of the finger
and forms a projection that is called the free
edge. This is attached to the nail bed and
appears as white. The function of the free
edge is to protect the fingertip and the
hyponychium. This is the part we file and
shape!
07 CUTICLE
The overlapping epidermis around
the base of the nail is called the
cuticle. The function of the cuticle is
to protect the matrix from infection.
08 LUNULA
This is located at the base of the
nail, lying over the matrix. It is
white in color and known as half-
moon. The nail is slightly soft in
this area and can be easily
damaged.
