A Science of Automating Human Tasks

Presented by:

Agenda:
Introduction
History
Laws
Structure
Robotic software
Advantages & disadvantages
Future prospects.

introduction:
What is robotics?

According to the modern definition
Robotics is defined as
“ An automatic device that performs
functions normally ascribed to humans
or a machine in the form of a human”
-Brewster.

irocksss
History:
The most earlier recorded mention of Robots was in
first century A.D .
Descriptions of more than 100 machines and
automata, including a fire engine, a wind organ, a
coin-operated machine, and a steam-powered engine,
in Pneumatica and Automata by Heron of Alexandria

The word robot was
introduced to the public
by the Czech writer Karel
Čapek in his play R.U.R
(Rossum's Universal
Robots), published in
1920.

LAWS OF ROBOTICS:
The term robotics was coined in the 1940s by science
fiction writer Isaac Asimov.
Asimov's Laws of Robotics:
A robot may not injure a human being, or, through
inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings
except where such order would conflict with the First
Law.
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such
protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

WHY ROBOTICS?
 Speed.
 It can work in
hazardous/dangerous
environment.
 To perform repetitive
task.
 Efficiency
 Accuracy
 Adaptability

irocksss
Types of robots:
Wheeled
Legged
Climbing
Flying

STRUCTURE
The structure of a robot
is usually mostly
mechanical and can be
called a kinematic chain.
The chain is formed of
links (its bones),
actuators (its muscles),
and joints which can
allow one or more
degrees of freedom.

EDUCATION PROSPECTIVE
CAREER TRAINING:
Robots recently became a popular tool in
raising interests in computing for middle and
high school students.
First year computer science courses at several
universities were developed which involves the
programming of a robot instead of the
traditional software engineering based
coursework.

Employment in robotics

Robotics is an essential
component in any
modern manufacturing
environment.

As factories increase

their use of robots, the
number of robotics
related jobs grow and
have been observed to be
on a steady rise.

ROBOTS IN POPULAR CULTURE:

irocksss
ROBOTIC SOFTWARE:
Robot software is
the coded commands that
tell robots what tasks to
perform and control its
actions.

VAL was one of the first

robot ‘languages’ and was
used in Unimate robots.
Other ex: Epson
RC+,ROBOFORTH.
irocksss
ADVANTAGES:
Revolution in Medical science and Health care
systems.
New & wide scope in Education & Training.
A good help in Nuclear industry.
Used tremendously in Sports activities.
Play the role of an efficient assistance in Research and
Development sciences.
Can very well handle household business.

Disadvantages:Relationship to unemployment

Some analysts, such as Martin Ford, argue

that robots and other forms of automation
will ultimately result in
significant unemployment as machines
begin to match and exceed the capability of
workers to perform most jobs.

irocksss
In The future:
Scientists say that it is
possible that a robot brain
will exist by 2019 .
Vernor Vinge has suggested
that a moment may come
when computers and robots
are smarter than humans.
In 2009, some robots
acquired various forms of
semi-autonomy, including
being able to find power
sources on their own.
irocksss
Conclusion:
A Day may come when the robots are capable of
training themselves and its practically
undistinguishable from ourselves.
 Nothing is totally impossible. Perhaps one day we will
be able to produce robots that are practically
indistinguishable
from ourselves.
