Purpose of Barricades
Sometimes provides
protection to people from
physical hazards.
Provides a method for the
recognition of hazards in the
working area.
Helps to define the general
foot print or layout of the
working area.

Warning Barricades
Warning barricades generally consist of:
Poly rope and tape.
Rubber or plastic cones 75 cm high with tape.
Plastic chain.
Rebar with tape and caps.
Barricade signs with tape.
Yellow and black tape for general use.
Red tape for restricted access.
Magenta/yellow tape for radiation activities.
Warning barricades shall be erected to a height of
approximately 1.0 m from the ground or floor.

Warning Barricades
Yellow and Black Tape:
Used to represent caution and must be
exercised when entering the area where the
work is being performed.
Personnel shall exercise caution in determining
the hazards involved prior to entering the
barricaded area, and only enter through gate.
Examples-excavations <0.5 m and material
storage.

Protective Barricades
Protective barricades commonly
referred to as “hard barricades”
Rigid construction type constructed
to be able to withstand a 200 lbs.
lateral force at a height of
approximately 1.0 m from the ground
or floor.
Pole and tube-lok scaffold members
connected.
Minimum 50 X 100 mm timbers
secured with nailing or wood screws. 20

Protective Barricades
A protective barricade shall be used:
Around all excavations of depth greater than 1.5 m.
Where there is a fall potential of greater than 1.5 m.
Any excavation that is adjacent to roadways or
walkways.
Around roof openings.
Around floor openings, i.e. grating removal.
Whenever a warning barricade cannot be erected at
least 1.5 m from a hazard.

Barricade Tagging
All barricades shall be provided with tag(s), properly
filled out, and placed near the gate or loop access
with the following information.
Identifying purpose of barricade.
Name of the owner (who installed it).
Special conditions or hazards noted.
Signature of person with job title and contact
details, dated when placed into use.
Use black ink, suitable to withstand the weather
conditions.

Barricade Signs
Warning, Caution and / or Danger signs shall be
placed adjacent to barricades, prefer near the
access gate.
Barricade sign message shall be large enough to
visibly see from a distance of several meters
away and be consistent with project
expectations.
Can be in multiple languages, however must
remain consistent with all other barricades.

Responsibility
All personnel who work inside the barricade are
responsible to see that the barricade is
maintained in good order and that
housekeeping is maintained and the work group
finishing last shall make area safe and remove
barricading.
It is constructions responsibility to ensure that
this is communicated to personnel involved in
the erection of barriers (barricades) and also
those who will be working in areas that will be
protected by barricades.

Responsibility Cont.:
When two or more work groups are operating
within the same barricade, each work group
should review the tag and ensure that all
hazards have been identified on the tag and are
appropriate.
