Let us learn!
Read the sentences. Take note of the underlined
words. What are they? When did they happen?

1. The President accepted a speaking invitation

last week.
2. He also received a letter from a sick teacher
three days ago.
3. After reading the letter, the President left his
coffee and busied himself in getting the
medicine.

Read the poem below and again, take note the underlined verbs.

“The Quarrel” (An Excerpt)

by Eleanor Farjeon
I quarreled with my brother,
I don’t know what about.
One thing led to another
And somehow, we fell out.
The start of it was light
The end of it was strong
He said he was right
I knew he was wrong.

Most verbs are considered regular because they take the -d

or -ed form to show past tense. Accepted, received, and
busied are regular verbs.

Regular verbs are verbs whose past tense form

end with -d or -ed. The past tense form -d or -ed
are used to tell about past actions. Study more
regular verbs.
6

Some regular verbs add -d to form their past tense.

Others are added with -ed. There are also regular verbs
with single syllable that the ending letter is doubled and
added with -ed. Others ending in -y, change the letter y
to letter i and add -ed.
7
However, there are other verbs that form their past tense in other ways.
Study the verbs in their past tense form and compare them with their base form.

These verbs are called irregular verbs because they

don’t follow the -d and -ed rule. Most irregular verbs
change their spelling when they form the past tense
while others maintain their spelling.
