Synopsis
Rohit Narang, a creative computer programmer joined Apex Computers hoping to
grab better career opportunities than the previous firm he worked at. He was a senior
there with better pay and he was excited for the new challenges. But when he got to
know his team, they told him that his boss was not as friendly and open as his previous
boss was. Which was a bit odd for Rohit as he didn’t expect that to happen. But he was
an optimistic person and he hoped for the best. But he noticed many things like dull
workplace, demotivated employees that started to effect his judgment. And then, his
team was assigned to a new project. In that project, everyone came across a problem
that needed to be fixed. So Rohit came up with a solution on his own to fix the
problem and was very excited to share it with his boss Aparna and his team members.
But when he went to meet Aparna, she didn’t even hear what Rohit had to say fully .
And said that she’ll will provide the necessary solution. He didn’t expect this answer
from Aparna and when he discussed with his team members about this they told him
that they also don’t come up with any new ideas because there is no point. Their boss
wont listen to them. Rohit felt his heart sink out of disbelief and confusion. As days
went by , Rohit realized that Aparna was the opposite of his old boss. She was efficient
and a brilliant programmer but was not a good leader. Eventually Rohit lost interest in
his work.
Reasons for Rohit’s disillusionment
Rohit was a brilliant and creative programmer who wanted to grow and
achieve something in his life. But his transition to Apex halted his plan.
The reasons can be explained using Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

Self actualization

Esteem
Needs

Social needs

Safety needs

Physiological Needs
Explanation
Physiological needs – The job at Apex fullfilled Rohit’s
Physiological needs such as Food, Water, Shelter, Clothing etc.
Safety needs – The job also fulfilled Rohit’s safety needs like need
of security of job, security of family, security of health etc.
Social needs – His social needs were also partly fulfilled. His team
members were warm and friendly but they didn’t share the
same level of enthusiasm as Rohit did.
Esteem needs - this is a level which was not achieved by Rohit at
all at Apex. He wasn’t able to achieve anything, his prestige
didn’t get a boost and his confidence became low.
Self actualization – This level is not possible without the
achievement of previous levels. And Rohit’s also didn’t self
actualize.
What should Rohit do to resolve his
situation ?
In this case of utter demotivation and hopelessness,
Rohit should stay motivated and be hopefull. And
keep doing what he does best. Be an excellent
programmer with creative skill. Yes, his boss wont like
it for a few days. But she sees that he is very motivated,
relentless and also very talented, maybe the next day
Aparna will listen to what Rohit has to say.
How can a Team leader ensure high
levels of motivation among team
members ?
Provide people with a pleasant place to work.
Provide opportunities for self development.
Promote collaborative worj among team.
Encourage happiness and positivity.
Don’t punish failures.
Set clear Goals to achieve and strive towards.
