Why Rotameter

• Are Rotameters technical an atractive product? No!!

• Can Rotameters help you to solve your Probably
customers measurement problems? not!
• Do Rotameters look smart? No!!

How do you feel when you say: I am selling this

tiny little products called ROTAMETERS ? Bad!!

Question: Do you like cows?

Why Rotameter

• Are ROTAMETERs low-tec products?

It depends. You do not need any electronic at a ROTAMETER,but
physics is complicate and manufactoring high automatisized.
• Are ROTAMETERs for simpel minded,
low educated people?
It depends. For a user they are very simple to handle and to
maintain. For a manufacturer they are quite complicate.
• Are ROTAMETERs easy to sell?
If you are in, the customer will order by himself.
Large projects (only metal) you have big discounts, ask PMK for
more discount.

Page.6
Why Rotameter

Are ROTAMETERs easy to specify?

It is easy if you know the product. But this
product has
a wide variety. Therefore: You have to
understand
ROTAMETERs from basic.

And: you need a very good

Why Rotameter

Features:
ROTAMESSER with Glass Measuring Tubes
used above all, when the position of the float and consequently
the measured value, must be monitored directly
Due to the comact sizes, the Rotameter can be installed in
extremly limited spaces
Glas tubes are resistant to highly agressive mediums
Electrical contact device for limit monitoring and optical
transmissions of the float position as a facility for conversion into
an electrical signal are available
Large selection of measuring ranges
High accuracy by free rotating float even at low flow rates
Loacal indication without resource

Page.9
Why Rotameter

Features:

ROTAMESSER with Plastic Measuring Tubes

Plastic ROTAMETER represent the most economical alternative in the
supply range
With exclusive use of high quality plastice, they are unbreakable and
pressure-resistant
Resistant against a mulitude of mediums
Breakage proof and highly corrosion-resistant
Low pressure loss
Selectable scales

Force Equation
p*/4*DS2
p*/4*DS2 = m * g - VS *r

VS*r p = pressure loss at the float

DS = diameter of the float
m = mass of the float
g = acceleration in the earth field
VS = Volume of the float
 = Density of the fluid
The expression of the pressure loss
m*g as a function of the squared volume
flow leads to the flow equation.

RAMC FAQ
Q1: Why choose a metal tube against a glass tube?
A1: A metal tube is chosen because of the higher pressure and
temperature, because of safety reasons. Less spare parts are
required.

Q2: What does the accuracy class of 1.6 realy means in

percentage of flow?
A2: The accuracy of a VA-Meter is given by the so called accuracy class,
i.e. for every scale position a tolerance of accuracy can be
calculated
(in engineering units as l/hr, cc3/min if the following formula is
applied:

E = (3/4 Fi + 1/4 Fs) K

100
E = Total measurement error in engineering units.
Fi = Flow rate at point of measurement in engineering units
Fs = Full scale flow rate
K = accuracy class i.g. 2.5
Page.49
RAMC FAQ

Q3: What process temperature do we use the high temperature option?

A3: Process temperature up to 100°C can be measured in the 64 version
(plasitic housing), for higher temperatures we have to use the
63 housing (aluminium housing).

Q4: If the process condition changes is the calibration affected?

A4: If the process condition is changing, the calibration ia also affected.
If liquids are measured, changes in density effect the scale. For gases
pressure and temperature changes effect the scale.
But RYG is keeping all orginal water calibrations, so new scaling
for other fluids can be done very simply.

Q5: Is it possible to change the flow span of an existing unit?

A5: Changing the flow span of an already existing unit is possible. You
exchange float and scale very easily and quickly. Options up to
4 different floats are available.

Question & answers RAMC

Page.50
RAMC FAQ

Q6: What is the effect on the accuracy if a new float is fitted?

A6: If the new float is the same one as the float to be replaced accuracy will
also be the same. If S1 is changed to M1 for example we get one class
lower.

Q7: What is the highest viscosity the RAMC can measure?

A7: This question can not be answered in one sentence it depends on the size
of the flowmeter and the kind of the float. S1 is less sensitive than M1,
M1 is less sensitive than L1.

Q8: What test are carried out on the welded parts?

A8: We have to distinguish between a pressure-test and a leak-test.
Pressure test is executed with F = 1,5 of the nominal pressure i.e.
PN 40 = Pressure test at 60 bar. Leak test means that the flowmeter has to
to be placed under water filled with air and tested at 6 bar. g for 1 minute.
No bubbles must appear.
The required special helium leak test as well as pentetration tests are
available.
Page.51
RAMC FAQ
Q9: Can the meter be supplied with RTJ or other process connections?
A9: Special flange connections are available at higher prices. DIN-flanges
PN40 and ANSI flange 150lbs RF are standard.

Q10: Is there an option of PTFE and other wetted parts materials?

A10: Standard lining is PTFE. Other lining material as PVDF or Polypropylene
are possible. Also other material than 1.4571 is available, for example
Hastelloy C4 or Monel.

Q11: It is possible to receive calibration data of an old unit?

A11: ROTA YOKOGAWA keeps all orginal water calibration for a period
of 13 years.

Q12: What is flange finish. What is the Ra value?

A12: The standard production offers Rc 12.5 M by special arrangement we
can offer other finishes.

Page.52
RAMC FAQ

Q13: Are straight pipes required?

A13: Straight pipes of 5D before and 5D behind the VA-Meter are
recommended for DN80 and DN100.

Q14: Is there any sensitivity against pulsations?

A14: Pulsation should be avoided, no installation behind piston pumps.

Q15: What is the effect of miss-aligned pipes?

A15: Influence of miss-aligned pipes can be neglected.
A difference of +/- 1 step between diameter of the pipe and diameter
of the VA-Meter is allowed.

Q16: Are there any cavitation problems?

A16: There are nor problems of the low flow speed and low pressure drops.
