Media is defined as tools used by the source to disseminate

information to the receivers. It can be broadcast media such as television


and radio, print media such as newspaper and magazines, new media or
Internet, and non-traditional media like film, literature, and outdoor media.
In giving information and instructions, making explanations, and
narrating events, you as the source of the message must know how to use
appropriate media platform to convey your message, so that it will be easy
for the receiver to comprehend the message.
The source should think of the type of medium that will be used in
disseminating the information. Most often than not, the source selects
medium or media in conformity with the characteristics of the information
users or receivers.
Basically, different media have different forms and characteristics. The
user of media must understand its nature in order to maximize its use. So,
the three basic types of media are:
1. Print Media
2. Broadcast Media
3. New Media
The Print Media
The Print Media
Print Media is a type of media in the form of printed publications; it involves ink and paper.
Some examples of print media are books, magazines, newspapers, newsletters, posters,
brochures, and press release.
Characteristics of Print Media
Print Media is characterized as a proponent of literacy, portable, independent form of media,
and structured.
Print media is a proponent of literacy because it is essentially written media, which one must
be able to read to patronize print; in that, it promotes literacy.
Print media is the most portable platform of media because of its size and weight allow people
to carry it everywhere.
Characteristics of Print Media
Print media is an independent form of media because print does not require separate
medium or technology to transmit or receive information.
Print media is structured because the grammar and proper sentence construction should be
observed at all times. Layout is required before publishing that’s why structure is given
emphasis here.
The Broadcast Media
The Broadcast Media
Broadcast media denotes the airborne transmission of electromagnetic audio signals
(radio) or audio-visual signals (television) that are readily accessible to a wide population
via standard receivers.
Characteristics of Broadcast Media
Although radio and television are considered as forms of broadcast media, they both differ in
broadcast features or characteristics.
Radio is a tool that uses voice, sound, and music. These are essential elements of radio, which the
producers of information in radio should bank on more to these elements to effectively convey the
message or to get the attention of the receiver.
Characteristics of Broadcast Media
Radio has two formats in terms of frequency:
AM (Amplitude Modulated) radio and
FM (Frequency Modulation) radio.
AM radio offers variety stations that features different program formats such as
dramatic programs and non-dramatic programs: news and commentary, talk show,
counselling, educational, and informative. While in FM radio, it offers music and
entertainment program formats.
Characteristics of Broadcast Media
On the other hand, television can be considered as the most powerful medium in the
mass communication. It has complete features: sight and sound, which make the audience
more convenient in terms of exposure and participation. Additionally, television has two
main elements audio: sound, music, and voice; video/visual: footage, graphics, and text.
The New Media
The New Media
New media refers to “those digital media that are interactive, incorporate two-way
communication and involves some form of computing.” Additionally, new media is “very easily
processed, stored, transformed, retrieved, hyperlinked, easily searched for and accessed”

These are the six key characteristics which distinguish New Media from old media.
Digital
 Information is now converted, stored and transmitted as binary code (a series of 1s and 0s)
 Digitalization allows so much information to be stored in compact hard disks or micro memory cards.
 Digitalization has also resulted in ‘technological convergence’, or the convergence of different forms of
information (text, audio and visual) into one single ‘system’ – most web sites today offer a fusion of text and
audio-visual information, and our mobile devices allow us to perform a variety of functions

Interactivity
 New Media is a two way affair and it allows consumers and users to get more involved.
 Increased interactivity can be seen in simple acts such as liking a Facebook post or commenting on news
piece or blog.
 Fostered a more participatory culture

Hypertextual
 Hypertext or ‘links’ allows users more freedom of choice over how they navigate the different
sources of information available.
 Web sites offer non-sequential connections between all kinds of data facilitated by the computer.

Global Networks
 Digital Media has also facilitated cultural globalization – we now interact much more
globally and via virtual networks of people rather than locally.

 New Media presents to us a very different reality from face to face to ‘lived reality’ – for most
of us this means a very fast paced flow of information with numerous products and people
screaming for our attention.

Simulation
 Simulation is most obviously experienced computer games which provide an immersive
experience for users into a “virtual life” that is simulated through digital technology
Now that you know what are the different types of media
resources, as well as their forms and characteristics, bear in mind
that when you combine each feature of different media resources
will result to multi-media.
