What exactly is
photonics?
 A photon is a tiny particle that comprises waves of
electromagnetic radiation.
 Photonics is the physical science and application of
light (photon) generation, detection, and manipulation
through emission, transmission, modulation, signal
processing, switching, amplification, and sensing.
 Most photonic applications are in the range of visible
and near-infrared light(Visible light has a wavelength
that ranges from 380 nm – 750 nm while infrared
light is ranging from 700 nm – 1 mm).
Photonics communication
 What is the difference between optics and photonics?
 Optics is a general area of physics covering a wide range of topics related to the
study of light. Optics includes such subfields as geometrical optics, physical
optics, and quantum optics. Photonics is a subset of the optics discipline.
 Photonics communication is communicating using photons(light).
 Photonic communication refers to the quantum side of light and the devices used
to generate photons are photonic devices.
 These devices consume less energy.
Photonic devices

 Photonic devices are components for creating, manipulating or detecting light.

This can include laser diodes, light-emitting diodes, solar and photovoltaic cells,
displays and optical amplifiers.
 Photonic devices generally have extreme sensitivity to the environment and
manufacturing imperfections. For this reason, it is important to be able to estimate
the yield of photonic circuits and attempt to identify design centers where devices
have optimal yield while meeting performance specifications.
 The characteristics of photonic gadgets create additional dimensions such as
energy-saving, expanded communication distance, and enlarged bandwidth.

Photonics and daily life
 Photonics plays an important role in driving innovation across an increasing number of fields. The
application of photonics spreads across several sectors, from optical data communications to imaging,
lighting and displays, to the manufacturing sector, to life sciences, health care, security and safety.
 Health
 Photonics has the potential to revolutionize healthcare because of the ability of light to detect and measure
diseases in a fast, sensitive and accurate way.
 Bio-photonics is the use of light-based technologies in the bio & medical sciences.
 Photonic technologies also play a major role in addressing the needs of our ageing society from
pacemakers to synthetic bones to endoscopes to the micro-cameras used in in-vivo processes.
 Lighting and energy savings
 Photonics are used also in advanced lighting technology, such as Solid-state Lighting (SSL) for general
lighting applications. SSL is based on light emitting diodes (LEDs) and organic light emitting diodes
(OLEDs) technologies.
 SSL provides higher quality lighting and contributes to substantial energy savings. Intensive manufacturing
and research activities aim to further improve SSL performance, particularly energy efficiency and quality,
and therefore reduce costs.
 Broadband Internet
 The need for faster, more transparent, dynamic and greener broadband networks
drives EU research policy in the field of optical data communications.
 Research in this area addresses the dramatic increase of power consumption on the
web, in data centers and servers.
 The aim is to allow traffic growth, fast network changes and varying traffic demands
while making data communications faster, cheaper and more energy efficient.
 Safety and security
 Photonics is a key enabler for enhancing the safety and security of people, goods and
the environment. It brings the possibility of building contactless sensors and visual
applications operating in various ranges of the light spectrum from x-ray to terahertz.
Such sensors would be sufficiently sensitive and accurate to reliably detect potential
hazards or dangerous situations.
 Security applications also rely on photonics technologies, for example in biometrics
and border security systems, video surveillance systems and equipment to detect
dangerous or illegal goods.

Applications of photonics devices

• Consumer gadgets- printer, DVD, remote devices, barcode gadgets and blue-ray
gadgets
• Telecommunication-optical converters and optical fibre communication devices
• Medicine- devices for poor eyesight correction, tattoo removal, laser surgery and
surgical endoscopy
• Entertainment-beam effects, holographic art and laser shows
• Photonic computing-printed circuit board, quantum computing, optoelectronic
circuits and clock distribution
• Metrology- range-finding, frequency measurements
Advantages

 Optical communication circuits, known as photonics, have two main advantages

over communication that relies on conventional wires:
• Using light has the potential to be brutally energy efficient.
• A single fiber-optic strand can carry a thousand different wavelengths of light at
the same time, allowing for multiple communications to be carried simultaneously
in a small space and eliminating cross talk.
• Freedom from electrical short circuits or ground loops.
• Safety in combustible environment.
• Faster and more efficient information processing may come down to light rather
than electricity.
Disadvantages

• Spurious reflections are more troublesome.

• It is more expensive.
• Harder to fix.
• Waveguides and fibers are harder to use than wires.
• Harder to miniaturize (coupling between adjacent waveguides, bending
• losses etc).
• Harder to do logic.

Conclusion

 The possibilities for the future appear almost endless as technology continues to
develop and evolve, and the utilization of photonics is going to play a vital part in
the innovation of many fields.
 Photonics is helping to transform every aspect of our life, for example, in
security, optical data, communication and healthcare, with big things coming in
future.
 Photonics are so common in our day-to-day lives that their utilization likely now
passes us by. The technology provides an incredible opportunity for the design
and manufacturing industry, helping to provide more accurate, faster results while
also transforming the telecommunications industry.
