THE RELAY EVENTS
4X100 METER RELAY
• Team Member Selection
• Lead off: Best starter, reliable, runs curve well
• 3rd leg: Strong curve runner, also able to take and give handoff
• Anchor: Not always the fastest, but the best finisher…the one
with fight.
• If dropped, the baton shall be recovered by the
athlete who dropped it.
• Each athlete shall run100m before passing the baton in the take-over
zone.
• The 4 × 100m race shall be run entirely in lanes. Meaning, each athlete
in a relay team shall run only in their designated lane.
4 X 400M RELAY
• Each athlete shall run 400 meters (1 lap) before passing the baton
• The 4 x 400m race shall be run entirely in lanes for the first lap,
including the 1st bend up to the breakline.
• Meaning, the first runner runs entirely in their team’s designated lane for 1
lap;
• second runner runs only the 1st bend up to the breakline, and may transfer
to inner/other lane after the breakline;
• 3rd and 4th runners (when receiving the baton), will be placed in a lane
designated by the officials based on the order of the incoming (passer)
runners.

first bend entirely in their lanes assigned lane

Then 2nd runners may transfer to inner lanes after exiting from the
breakline

• NON-VISUAL PASS – mostly done in 4 x 100m relay
