1. Physician - head of the NST. He/She is responsible for the
entire team, duties and responsibilities. He/She
• Determine the needs for TPN.
• Order the volume and composition of the TPN solutions for infusion
on a day to day basis.
• Insert the central vein catheter.
• Start the TPN infusion assisted by the TPN nurse.
• Anticipate and recognize early complications of TPN.

2. Nurse - key figure in the NST, being in constant contact with the patient.
He/She:

• Prepares the patient emotionally and physically for the procedures to be


done.
• Assists the physician during the catheter insertion.
• Ensures that the physician’s orders are carried out.
• Takes charge of the care and maintenance of the central vein catheter.
• Ensures that strict aseptic techniques are used in handling all bottles,
tubing, filters, and pumps.
• Monitors the TPN patient, to avoid the possibility of contamination or
accidental withdrawal of the IV line.
• Detects TPN complications.
• Assists the physician in weaning the patient from TPN.

3. Pharmacist- responsible for preparing the sterile TPN
solutions.He/She:
• Prepares the necessary intravenous solutions, additives,
materials and other supplies.
• Provides information about the availability and costing of
solutions and additives presently available in the market,
as well as those to be introduced
• Computes the volume of ingredients to be used in the
preparation of solutions ordered by the physician. Adjusts
the amount of fluid prepared to provide filling of
administration and tubing.

3. Pharmacist
• Combines all the necessary ingredients aseptically as prescribed
by the physician.
• Informs the physician on suspected errors in the ordering of
TPN solutions.
• Informs physician on the need for substitution of drugs or
solutions
• Check the compatibility of the TPN solution and advise the
physician on any compatibility problems.
