• Identify the different Philippines
instrumental music
• Explain how these performing groups
were formed; and
• Appreciate the skills and talents of the
Filipino musicians
RONDALA
The Rondalla is a performing group that uses string
instruments such as banduria, laud, oactavia, guitar
and double mass. It’s name was derived from the
Spanish word rondo which mean “serenade”. The
Rondalla group was first introduced during the 19 th
century and became part of the Philippine folk music.
According to Dr. Antonio Molina, a
national artist for music, the Rondalla
started as a very informal group of
music loving Filipinos
1. Banduria
It is an instrument with the highest
pitch range. Usually, this instrument
plays the melody. The Spanish
banduria has 12 strings while the
Filipino banduria has 14 strings.
The specific notes of the strings
are F# B E A D G or Fa#, Ti, Mi, La,
Re, Sol.
2. Laud and Octavina
These instruments play
the contra -puntal
(counter Their strings
are tuned like the
banduria strings but
are lower. They also
have 14 string.
3. Guitar
The guitar is a popular
instrument with usually 6
strings. It is typically
played by strumming or
plucking the strings. It
plays the rhythm or beat
of the musical piece.
4. Bajo de unas
It is the largest instrument of
the rondalla. This stringed
instrument has only 4 thick
strings, but there are rare
bass instruments that have 6
strings. It plays the bass
part of the musical piece. The
notes of the strings are E A D
G or Mi, La, Re, Sol.
Brass Band
• It is a musical group that exclusively play
brass instruments. In the Philippines, one
of the renowned brass bands is the Click icon to add picture
Philippine Constabulary Band. It was
organized by Col. Walter Loving in 1901.
The band consisted of army officers and
participated in international competitions
where they gained recognition and fame.
Today, it has been renamed as the
Philippine Army Band and is considered to
be the well-known military band in the
country.

(Musikong Bumbong)
• First Organized in the 189-’s by the
members of the Katipunan, the
musikawayan was a Filipino band
that used instruments made of
bamboo such as the angklung,
tipangklung, marimba, gamba,
bamboo. Clarinet, bamboo
saxophone, and bumbong.
Nowadays, there are musikawayan
groups which perform for local and
cultural events and festivals.

Angklung Ensemble
It is a group of Filipino musicians that plays the
angklung, an Asian bamboo instrument popularized
in Indonesia and Malaysia. Three or more
performers are needed in an angklung ensemble to
produce a complete melody, depending on the
number of notes and principles of the musical piece.
