INTRODUCTION
Waste generation is a natural part of human activity. But we can
limit the type of waste and quantity of waste produced. Often
we have been repelled by offensive smell. The sight of open
drains is disgusting. The situation worsens in the rainy season
when the drains start overflowing. We have to wade through the
mud pools on the roads. Most unhygienic and unsanitary
conditions prevail. Flies, mosquitoes and other insects breed in
it.
HOW WATER
AFFECT’S OUR
LIFE?
Getting enough water every day is important for your health. Drinking
water can prevent dehydration, a condition that can cause unclear
thinking, result in mood change, cause your body to overheat, and lead to
constipation and kidney stones. Water has no calories, so it can also help
with managing body weight and reducing calorie intake when substituted
for drinks with calories, such as sweet tea or regular soda.
Water helps your body:
•Keep a normal temperature.
•Lubricate and cushion joints.
•Protect your spinal cord and other sensitive tissues.
•Get rid of wastes through urination, perspiration, and bowel
movements.

DID YOU KNOW?

It has been suggested that we should plant
eucalyptus trees all along sewage ponds. These
trees absorb all surplus wastewater rapidly and
release pure water vapour into the atmosphere.

HOW TO BE AN
ENLIGHTENED CITIZEN?
You can be an enlightened citizen and approach the municipality
or the gram panchayat. Insist that the open drains be covered. If
the sewage of any particular house makes the neighbourhood
dirty, you should request them to be more considerate about
others’ health. request them to be more considerate about others’
health.
How To Save Water? 7

HOW TO SAVE
WATER?
•Keeping the tap closed when not in use.
•Check for the openings or leaks in water distribution pipes.
•Make sure to use collected rainwater for gardening or washing
purpose.
•Always have a measure of how many buckets of water is wasted in a
day and try to reduce.
•Do not run more water than necessary while washing and cleaning
clothes, utensils, etc.
•Do not prolong your bathing. Go for a quick shower rather than
wasting buckets of water
•Rainwater harvesting is one of the best method used for conserving
water. There are different methods used to preserve rainwater instead
of getting it wasted.
