PHONOL

OGYPhonology vs Phonetic
Experimental and Descriptive phonetics
Vowels and Consonants
Outcomes
At the end of the presentation,
you're expected to:
1. Define, compare and contrast phonology and
phonetics.

2. Differentiate between major divisions in

speech sounds (vowels and consonants).

3. understand that Phonology can never be

completely devorced from phonetics.
What is
Phonology?
"The study of sound
structure in language''
It describes the way
sounds function-
within a given
An example of
phonology is the
study of different
sounds and the way
they come together
to form speech and
words- such as
The comparison of
the sounds of the
two "p" sounds in
PHONETICS
Abstract study Concrete study
of sounds of sounds
Studies Studies the
different production ,tra
patterns of nsmission, and
sound mo perception of
sound
Phonology is Phonetics is
Phonetics and
phonology are
inseparable.
What is
Phonetics?
"The study of
sounds in a
speech in
physical terms"
An example of
phonetics is how
the letter "b" in
the word "bed"
is spoken.
Then, air from your
lungs is forced over
your vocal cords,
which begin to
vibrate and make
noise. The air then
escapes through
your lips as they
part suddenly,
Branches of
Phonetics
1. Acoustic phonetics
2. Auditory phonetics
3. Articulatory phonetics
1. Acoustic Phonetics
This subfield tries to answer "how
speech sounds are transmitted
from the speakers mouth to
hearer".
2. Auditory Phonetics
It investigates "how the the hearer
understands which speech sounds
are being produced''.
3. Articulatory phonetics
It investigates which speech organs are
involved in sound production. It provide
the description '' of how speech sounds
are produced by the tongue, lips, voca
cords, etc.''
Types of Phonetics studies
Descriptive
E.g. measure vowels formants,
duration of long and short vowels
Experimental
Hypothesis testing, e.g. Does vowel
duration decrease as speech rate
increases?
VOWELS AND CONSONANTS
The major division in
speech sounds is
between vowels and
consonants.
Vowels
A vowel is a speech
sound made with
your mouth fairly
open, the nucleus of
a spoken syllable.
Consonant
A consonant is a
speech sound that is
articulated with a
complete or partial
closure of the vocal
tract. Which can be
combined with a
vowel to form a
