Module 1 - Introduction To Logic

1) Logic is the fundamental branch of philosophy that studies sound reasoning and distinguishing truth from falsehood. It aims to avoid mistakes in thinking. 2) Logic has characteristics of both a science and an art. As a science, it systematically organizes facts and principles about reasoning. As an art, it requires skill and judgment to apply reasoning perfectly. 3) Logic also concerns reasoning, critical thinking, and discovering the truth by looking deeper into beliefs rather than just accepting them without scrutiny.

Why LOGIC is a branch of

Philosophy?

Just as philosophy, it underlies all

other branches of human enquiry,
so logic is the most fundamental
branch of philosophy. Philosophy is
based on reasoning, and logic is the
study of what makes a sound
argument, and also of the kind of
mistakes we can make in reasoning.

DEFINITION OF LOGIC
It is generally defined as "the science and art of reasoning and
critical thinking".

Thus, logic concerns itself with the most fundamental but utterly
relevant endeavor of all - to distinguish what is true from what is
false, what is right from what is wrong, what is valid from what is
invalid what is sound from what is unsound, what is cogent from
what is not, and be critical about it.

Characteristics of Logic
A. Logic as a Science
"Science", in general, may be described as a branch of knowledge
that systematizes facts, principles, and methods. All of them have
a particular object of study that requires an organization and
compartmentalization of facts, principles, and methods to ensure a
greater degree of knowledge about the particular object of study.

Characteristics of Logic
B. Logic as an Art
"Art" denotes a skillful production or performance of something
that has an order, form, or beauty. The skill involved in any form of
art requires correct judgment in order that the product may be
created perfectly, or the performance to be executed flawlessly.
With a mastery of skills, an artist proceeds easily if the one
performing it is the artist himself.

Characteristics of Logic
C. Logic as Reasoning
As Homo sapiens, what is peculiar to the human species is our
rationality, i.e., our capacity to reason. As compared to other
creatures, e.g., brutes, the human person has deliberate control
over his cognitive faculties. We don't just merely think, we think
correctly and truthfully, and we reason. However, it is a fact that
not all men think correctly and truthfully.

Characteristics of Logic
D. Logic as Critical Thinking
Whenever a person thinks, he wants to discover the truth about
something. In everyday life, there are a lot of things that we simply
take for granted. There are many things that we do not bother to
think about because we believe that what we know about them is
already the truth-a truth that cannot be doubted. However, if we
take the time to look deeper into these beliefs, we find ourselves
thinking more seriously.

believed - the true, the probable, and
the logical.”
