Children in 1810-1835 entertained themselves with games that did not require advanced technology. Common table games included dominoes, tiddlywinks, and pickup sticks. Popular board games were chess, checkers, and backgammon. Outdoor games like cup and ball, nine pins (bowling), hopscotch, jump rope, and rounders provided physical activity. Other games children enjoyed were whirligig and marbles. Over time, these traditional games became outdated as technology advanced and provided new forms of entertainment like televisions, radios, and later mobile phones and the internet.

Games and entertainment
for children between 1810
and 1835 By James Snowden Introduction In the PowerPoint I am going to be showing you how children stayed entertained in their free time either outside or indoors. Children from this era had very different entertainment methods compared to our generation. Firstly, they didn’t have advanced technology such as iPhones and smart TVs fitted with games consoles. Secondly there wasn’t anything such as TikTok and Netflix, giving you a choice on what you'd like to watch, which includes hours upon hours of watch time. The Things I am going to show you may not sound very entertaining for you to use, but to them they loved using what they had. Each game was made from a different material for example they may have been man made from wood or metal. Table games In the 1800s there were games called the table games where games were played on a table and required a steady hand or quick thinking to win it. These were normally played by lower to middle class children. There are so many games to name but here are some common ones that would have been played : Dominoes – This was a loved and a favourite game to play for many people and it is still played today. This included rectangular blocks with different dots on, which ranged from 0-6. In order to play this game you have to connect the correct blocks with the same number. The first player to lay down all their dominoes wins. Tiddlywinks – Most people have heard of tiddlywinks and players use a disk called a shooter to flip smaller disks into a cup that sits in the middle of the area they are playing. Pickup Sticks – This is also a vey popular game and is still played now. The aim of the game is to put all the sticks into the middle and each player takes it in turns to move a stick without moving the other sticks. First player to get the most sticks wins. Cards – Card games was also another popular game, an example would be snap. Children would learn maths by playing cards games as they are educational. Board games There were many board games played in the 1800s and were mostly used by middle to upper class children. A lot of these games are still played today. Chess, checkers and backgammon have been played by children and adults for hundreds of years and in the 1800s new boards games were introduced for family's to play and enjoy. Outdoor games Outdoor games were a good way to have fun for children and help them to socialise by playing with one another. Here are some examples: Cup and ball – This game originated in France and travelled around the world and has taken on different names and different shapes. To play it you try to catch the ball in the cup which was attached to a piece of string. Nine pins – Most people may refer to this as bowling but it has a different spin on it. Back in the 1800s this game was known as skittles by most and it is played by rolling a ball to knock down as many pins as possible. The pins are usually places in a Dimond shape. Hopscotch, jump rope, rounders and croquet were common games played by children and were thoroughly enjoyed as they gave endless amounts of fun. Other Games There are lots of games that were played in the 1800s and there is too many to name but here are a couple that would have been popular: Whirligig – This games was played by a lot of children but isn’t very common to hear about in this generation. It is played by spinning a circle around until the string is tight and moving your hands in and out to keep the movement going, then you let go and it should carry on spinning and make a sound. Marbles – Marbles have been a popular children's game for centuries. The largest marble was the shooter and the smaller ones would be used to try and hit the shooter and the person closest to biggest marble would win. Later…. Despite there being a lot of options for children to have fun. After awhile these games became repetitive and outdated as it was basically the same concept. Life started to move forward as technology was developing and over the years more people were using better upgraded technology, such as Televisions and radios. Technology advanced once again creating complex devices which can be more addictive for people. It is so easy to use for example you can just find out any information you desire with the use of a mobile phone and the internet with a few taps of the screen.
