In the beginning…
◊ In circa AD 800-900, an Ethiopian goat herder – Kaldi who
found out that his goats became energetic after eating
berries of certain shrub.
◊ Because of curious, he tried and had a similar effect
◊ A monk who witnessed everything, picked some berries
from the same shrub. Then, he crushed them into powder
and added boiling water

Coffee Innovation Hit Its Stride

R.W.Hills developed a process that
removed air from coffee packages,
the so-called vacuum packing.
The process kept beans fresh much
longer.
1901 Soluble Coffee is Invented

• In 1906, G. Washington took this
concept and premiered the first

1903 German Discover Decaffeination
• Ludwig Roselius and Karl Wimmer, who
accidentally figured out a way to dewcaffeinate
coffee
• One of their shipments of coffee soaked in
seawater. Unexpectedly, taste of brewed coffee
still good, but it lost most of their caffeine
