Main Switch: ……………….
It placed at the proper place.
Current impulse switch ……..
Current impulse switch is an electromagnetic switch its switching contacts are
operated by an electromagnetic actuator

Its function is controlled by a momentary switch with a manually

based on its function We can to classified
Limit switch
Dimmer switch
 Timer switch
Manual switch

Push Button: - is a controlling device that controls
the operation of electrical machines and
other devises. That means it controls the flow of
current.

 A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch
designed to
protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or
short circuit. Its basic function is to detect a fault condition and
interrupt current flow
 A circuit breaker has several advantages over any type of fuse
a) during fault or overload, all the poles are simultaneously
disconnected from the supply.
b) Overload and time-lags are capable of adjustment within
limits.
c) The circuit can be closed again quickly onto the fault safely

 Thermal over load relay
 continuously operating motors must be protected against over

loads. Over load protection is recommended for all motors

 Thermal over load relays are designed to protect the motor

and other control

apparatus from excessive heating due to motor overloads
 There are two types of thermal over load relay.

the heat bends a bimetallic strip

the heat melts a film of solder.
Both act to open the motor control circuit

 Time delay relay contact permits to establish or interrupt
circuit in a given period
It is important to get automatic control of the motor
 Typically, time delay relays are initiated or triggered by

one of two methods:

 Application of input voltage
 Opening or closing of a trigger signal

Let’s take a closer look at a few of the more common types

of TDRs
On-delay timers
Off-delay timers

 Fuse is a wire of short length or thin strip of material having low melting point

 Three terms are used in connection with fuses

a. Current rating: - This is the maximum current that a fuse will carry indefinitely
without
excessive deterioration of fuse elements.
b. Fusing current: - this is the maximum current that will below the fuse
c. Fusing factor: - this is the ratio of the maximum fusing current to the current
rating
Types of Fuses
There are 3 types of fuses in common use today, these are:
1. Semi-enclosed Fuse
2. Cartridge Fuse
3. High Breaking Capacity Fuse

Contactors
It is electro mechanical switching devices whose operation is controlled by an
electromagnet. The electromagnet consists of a coil of wire with many turns wound on to
an iron core.
Generally, a contractor is used to switch higher powers than a relay and needs more current
to operate
Make Contact (NO): control or auxiliary contact which is closed when the main contacts
of the starter are actuated.
Break Contact (NC): control or auxiliary contact which is open when the main contacts of
the starter are actuated

05/23/23 9
Motor control is a portion of electrical system
It is a device or group of devices that regulates the function of a
motor or a machine.
2. Purpose of motor control
-to start and stop the motor
-to reverse the rotation of the motor
-to accelerate and decelerate the speed of the motor
-for jogging or inching
-for plugging
-to protect the motor and its operation
Power circuit
It is a circuit that includes the main power line which is Load
(motor) relay contact points
Contactor contact points and circuit breakers

05/23/23 10
 The control circuit
The control circuit is usually operated at lower voltage and
contains all the components necessary to switch power to the
motor ON and OFF under proper condition
 It is a circuit that controls the power circuit This may include
Push button ,Auxiliary contact points a contactor, relay , and
fuse.

Starting methods for 3 phase IM:-The following terminology is used
with reference to the starters for induction motor
Motor Starter: the combination of all switching and regulating means
to start and stop the motor
Manual operation: the operation which is called by the actuation of
lever
Automatic operation: the operation where the stating proceeds
automatically
Auxiliary circuit: the circuit which includes all the conducting parts of
the starter other than those of the main circuit of the starter.

A motor starter has the following functions to be performed
a. Start and stop the motor: this is the fundamental job of every
starter. It shall be capable of switching the motor “ON” and “OFF”
the line respectively safely and quickly.
b. Limit the motor in rush current:
c. Permit automatic control when required
d. Protect motor and other connected equipment

. Reading and interpreting industrial installation plan interpreting industrial
installation electrical symbols in order to interpret industrial installation the
electrician should be know the electrical symbols which are represented in the
architecture diagram of the electrical installation
The architecture diagram of the electrical installation gives the following
information
1. The layout of the installation
2. The various CKTs of the installation
3. The position of each components & gives the required measurements
4 The path & the method of installation
5. The various components of the installation

30/03/21 14
 Reading industrial installation plan
1. Lay out diagram: - provides an electrician with the technical
information required to layout & install the component &
connecting the lines of a control ckt.
2. Wiring diagram:- provides all the detailed technical information
about the control ckt& power ckt
3.CKT diagram:- provides an electrician with the detail
information required to interconnect the components &
connecting lines of the control ckt
