INTRODUCTION

Composite materials are materials composed of two or more distinct materials

that, when combined, exhibit properties that are different from those of the
individual components. The resulting material is designed to have superior
strength, durability, and other properties compared to traditional materials.

The resulting material is designed to have superior strength, durability, and other
properties compared to traditional materials.
OBJECTIVES

➢ Composite materials aim to reduce production costs and improve product

performance and durability.
➢ The main objectives of composite materials are to provide high strength and
stiffness with low weight, to have excellent corrosion and fatigue resistance, to be
able to withstand extreme environments, to have good thermal and electrical
properties, and to be easily moulded into complex shapes.

Constituents of composite material

Composite materials are typically made up of two or more constituent materials with different physical and
chemical properties. The two main components of composite materials are:

1. Matrix: The matrix is the material that holds the reinforcement together and transfers the load between
the reinforcement fibers. It can be a polymer, ceramic, metal or a combination of these materials.
2. Reinforcement: The reinforcement provides the strength and stiffness to the composite material. It can be
in the form of fibers, particles or flakes and is usually made up of materials such as carbon fiber, glass fiber,
aramid fiber, or natural fibers like bamboo or hemp.
3.Additives such as fillers, colorants, and curing agents are also added to enhance specific properties or
processing characteristics.
ADAVANTAGES
1. High strength-to-weight ratio
2. Design flexibility
3. Corrosion resistance
4. Excellent electrical properties
5. Low thermal expansion
6. Reduced maintenance requirements
DISADVANTAGES

1. High cost
2. Manufacturing complexity
3. Environmental concerns
4. Susceptibility to impact damage
5. Susceptibility to UV damage
6. Flammability
APPLICATIONS

➢ Composite materials have a wide range of applications in various industries due to their

unique properties and advantages. Some common applications of composite materials include:

➢ Aviation

➢ Auto mobiles

➢ Sports and recreation.

➢ Construction and interior design.

CONCLUSION

➢ The use of composite materials has significantly increased in various industries due to
their superior properties, such as high strength, stiffness, and lightweight. Composite
materials have been extensively researched, and their advantages and disadvantages are
well understood.
➢ The manufacturing processes for composite materials have also improved, making them
more accessible and cost-effective.
➢ The use of composite materials in various applications, including aerospace, automotive,
sports, and construction, has demonstrated their effectiveness and reliability.
FUTURE SCOPE

The future scope of composite materials is vast and promising. Some potential areas for growth and development
include.
➢ Advancements in nanotechnology: The use of nanotechnology in composite materials has the potential to enhance
their mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties, leading to improved performance and increased applications.

➢ Sustainable and eco-friendly composites: With the increasing focus on sustainability and the environment, the
development of composites made from renewable and eco-friendly sources is likely to become more prevalent.

➢ Overall, the future of composite materials looks bright, with continued growth and advancements expected in a
variety of industries and applications.
