Introduction
Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a type of childhood
disruptive behavior disorder that primarily involves problems
with the self-control of emotions and behaviors. According to
the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders,
Fifth Edition (DSM-5), the main feature of ODD is a persistent
pattern of angry or irritable mood, argumentative or defiant
behavior, or vindictiveness toward others.
Etiology
The exact etiology of oppositional defiant
disorder (ODD) is complex and often results
from an interplay between genetic,
environmental, and psychosocial factors.
Diagnostic criteria
A- At least for 6 months
• Vindictiveness
• Irritable/angry mood At least twice in six months
1. Loses temper (till five criteria…………Most days)
2. Often touchy and easily annoyed ( 5 year or more….Once in a week)
3. Angry and resentful
• Argumentative/defiant behavior
Argue with authoritative figure
Don’t comply with request
Deliberately annoys others
Blames others for his own mistakes
B- Disturbance in behavior associated with distress in individuals in his
immediate social context( family, peer group, work colleagues)
Negatively impact on social, educational and other important areas of
functioning
C- behavior not occur during course of psychotic, substance use m depressive ,
bipolar disorder or disruptive mood dysregulation
