What is OLTC (On-Load Tap Changer) ?
8
Design Parameters
Tap changing is usually done on the HV winding for two reasons:
1. Because the currents are lower, the tap changer contacts,
leads, etc., can be smaller.
2. As the HV winding is wound outside the LV winding, it is easier
to get the tapping connections out to the tap changer.

System Operation
OLTC Control Features :
• UAT high voltage windings are equipped with a motor driven multi-step device,
allowing automatic adjustment of the tap position to keep secondary voltage at
a constant level.
• On load tap changers comply with IEC 60214-1, IEC 60214-2 and with the
requirements of this specification. It is also be so designed that it may be
easily adapted to operate by automatic control. The equipment vary the turn
ratio without producing phase displacement. On load tap changers have
vacuum type interrupters.
• All tap changer leads and connections to fixed and moving contact assemblies
between the transformer and the voltage control device are supported and
adequately braced to withstand the short circuit current for which the
associated transformer is designed.
• In case of emergency, the tap changer shall be manually actuated from the
local by means of mechanical devices. Tap changing shall be prevented when
the transformer is carrying a load above a predetermined maximum or when
on short circuit.
• Limit switches are provided to prevent over-running of the mechanism and
directly connected in the circuit of the operating motor. Limit switches may be
connected in the control circuit of the operating motor provided that a
mechanical declutching mechanism is incorporated.

OLTC Control Features :
Electrical and mechanical means are also provided to prevent damage to the tap-
changing mechanism when the end of travel has been reached. A “tap-change
incomplete” alarm shall be provided.
