an extended definition can be “as
short as a paragraph or as long as
several hundred pages.”
Let’s try!

EXPANDING BY COMPARING AND CONTRASTING:
Differences between friendship and other forms
of relationships sheds light on its unique
characteristics. Unlike romantic relationships,
friendships are not based on romantic or
sexual attraction but rather on a deep
emotional connection rooted in shared values
and interests. Similarly, while familial
relationships are often based on blood ties,
friendships are built upon choice and a shared
sense of kinship.

EXPANDING BY DESCRIBING A PROCESS:
Friendship is a gradual process that unfolds
through stages of initiation, exploration, trust-
building, emotional intimacy, and sustained
support. It begins with initial encounters, evolves
through shared experiences and the
development of trust, and deepens as emotional
connections grow. Nurturing the friendship
requires reciprocity, communication, and ongoing
effort. Over time, a genuine friendship blossoms,
providing a lasting bond and a sense of
belonging.

DESCRIBING A
PROCESS
In Stephen Reid’s “The Prentice Hall
Guide for College Writers,” he notes that
“an extended definition may explain the
word’s etymology or historical roots,
describe sensory characteristics of
something, identify its parts, indicate
how something is used, explain what it is
not, provide an example of it, and/or note
similarities and differences between this
term and other words or things.”
EXPANDING BY GIVING ETYMOLOGY:
Friendship, derived from the Old English
word "freondscipe," encompasses a
deep bond between individuals
characterized by trust, mutual affection,
and support. A relationship extends
beyond mere acquaintanceship and
involves a genuine connection built on
shared experiences and common
interests.
EXPANDING BY PROVIDING THE SENSORY CHARACTERISTICS:

Friendship can include the warmth of

a friendly smile, the comforting touch
of a hug, or the joyous sound of
laughter shared between friends.
These sensory experiences often
accompany the emotional aspects of
friendship, fostering a sense of
belonging and camaraderie.

EXPANDING BY GIVING THE CONSTITUENT PARTS:
Understanding the parts of friendship
helps illuminate its essence. It comprises
qualities such as loyalty, empathy,
honesty, and compassion. These
components form the foundation of a
solid friendship, allowing individuals to
confide in one another, offer advice, and
provide a listening ear during both joyous
and challenging times.

ACTIVITY 4.3: Do me!

Directions: Identify the given paragraphs

whether it is Expanding by Giving
Examples, Expanding by Comparing and
Contrasting, Expanding by Describing a
process, Expanding by providing the
Sensory Characteristics, Expanding by
Giving the Etymology or Expanding by
Giving the Constituent parts.
1. My brother is very selfish. He does not want to share things with
other people. For example, when he buys a chocolate bar, he
puts it in a secret place. Then he eats it all, by himself. He never
helps anyone. He says he is busy. For example, a game of
Nintendo makes him very busy. He does not care if something
he does bothers other people. For instance, last night he played
loud rock 'n' roll music until four o'clock in the morning. In
conclusion, I think my brother is selfish and will always be
selfish.
2. Making a good cup of tea is exquisitely simple. First, the teapot
is heated by filling it with water that has just come to a boil.
This water is then discarded, and one teaspoon of loose tea
per cup is placed in the teapot (the exact amount may vary
according to taste). Fresh water that has just come to a boil is
poured into the pot. A good calculation is six ounces of water
for each cup of tea. The tea must now steep for three to five
minutes; then it is poured through a strainer into a cup or mug.
3. Getting a massive religious cult following involves more than
announcing the formation of a cult and letting the sheep flock
to the door. The first step the proposed leader must take in
getting his cult together is to identify his audience. Since
people's needs and ideals are so varied, he must avoid a
broad appeal, which is apt to go unnoticed, and concentrate on
a certain segment of the population, that is, specialize his
appeal. Anyone who can accomplish this process will be a full-
fledged cult leader.
4. Even when Hetty was young, she was stingy. For
instance, on her twenty-first birthday, she refused to
light the candles on her birthday cake because she did
not want to waste them. The next day, she cleaned the
candles and returned them to the store to get a refund.
Hetty was even stingy with her own child.
5. Johnsy is proactive. She anticipates the end of her life
due to her illness. She will get better only if she helps
herself to be strong and hopeful in facing different
challenges in her life. On the other hand, the Vine is
reactive, it would certainly die whenever a strong wind
comes. It can’t do anything for itself to live, it just
depends on the outside factor.
6. Death, derived from the Old English word "dēaþ," is an
expansive concept that encompasses the permanent
cessation of life and the transition from existence to
non-existence. It is a fundamental aspect of the human
experience, universally acknowledged across cultures
and time periods.
7. Death is a challenging task, as it pertains to the
absence of sensory perception itself. Death represents
the cessation of bodily functions, including respiration,
heartbeat, and neurological activity. It is accompanied
by the loss of consciousness, sensations, and the
ability to interact with the physical world.
8. Death is a philosophical inquiry that has sparked
numerous debates and interpretations. It involves
contemplating existential questions regarding the
nature of consciousness, the existence of an afterlife,
and the physical and spiritual aspects of human
existence.
