10 fantastic facts
1. Bats always turn left when they fly out o their home at night. Nobody knows why.
2. When you left eye moves, your right eye moves with it. But chameleons can move one eye up
and the other eye down, or one eye left and the other eye right.
3. An archerfish uses its mouth like a water gun. It shoots water at an insect. The insect falls, and
the fish eats it.
4. Albatrosses can sleep and fly at the same time. This is useful because they sometimes fly for
many days over water.
5. A hummingbird is the only bird that can fly backwards.
6. Mosquitoes are dangerous insects because they bite us. But did you know that only the females
bite?
7. Some chimpanzees can learn to understand 3000 words.
8. Sand tiger sharks never have more than two baby sharks. They eat their brothers and sisters
inside their mother before they are born.
9. Bees have a language. It is not a language of words but a language of dances. When a bee finds
food, it flies back to the other bees and does a dance. The dance makes a shape like an “8”. The
size and direction of the “8” shows the distance and direction of the food.
10. A cockroach can live for a week without a head.
The thirsty crow
One hot day, a thirsty crow was looking for some water to
drink. After searching and searching, the crow finally found a
pot with some water in it.
The crow was delighted. But when he put its beak into the pot,
he couldn't reach the water. There was only a little bit of water
at the bottom. The crow thought for a while and came up with a
brilliant idea.
The clever crow picked up pebbles and dropped them one by
one into the pot. The water inside the pot began to rise and rise
until finally, he could drink the water. The crow drank the water
and flew away happily.
The moral of this story is: Most problems have an answer, so
don´t stop trying.
The man, the boy and the donkey
This is a very old story, but it teaches us something that is still true today.
One day, a wise man said to his young son, “Come with me and I will show you something.” The
father got onto his donkey and told his son to walk behind him.
On the road, some people pointed at the man and said: “Look at that man. Why doesn't he let the
boy ride the donkey?” The man and the boy heard this, and so they changed places. The boy rode
and the man walked.
A few minutes later they passed some other people. The people pointed and said: “Look at that
boy. How can he ride while his old father walks?” So the man got onto the donkey with the boy.
Then they passed some other people, who said: “That poor little donkey can't carry two people.
They're much too heavy”. So they got off the donkey and they both walked.
They walked through a village, and people laughed at them, saying, “Look at those two fools!
Why do they walk when they have a donkey?”
The man and the boy thought, and then the man said, "We've tried walking and we've tried riding.
Let's try carrying it.” So they carried the donkey, and all the people in the village laughed at them,
saying, “Look! They're carrying the donkey! They're mad!”
Finally, they put the donkey down, and the man said to his son: “This is a lesson for you, my son.
In this life, you can never please everyone”.
Who do you believe?
This is a famous story about an old man and his donkey. This old man lived
in a village in a warm country a long time ago.
One day a young man came to the old man's house and said: “Can I use your
donkey today, please? My two donkeys are ill, and you're not using yours”.
The old man knew this young man well. The young man was not kind to
animals and often hit his donkeys. So his donkeys were often ill. The old man
did not want to say 'Yes', but he could not say 'No' because he was very
polite. So he said: “I'm sorry, but my donkey isn't here. My son is using it”.
The man did not believe this because the old man's son had three donkeys.
Then the old man's donkey made a loud noise, and the young man heard it.
The young man was angry and said: “I can hear the donkey in your garden.
How can you say it isn't here?”
This was a difficult question, but the old man always had an answer for
difficult questions. He looked at the young man and said: “Who do you
believe? Me or the donkey?”.
Polar bear makes the list
In spring 2008, the polar bear was placed on the endangered species list. According to the USA's Endangered
Species Act, an endangered species is an animal, plant or any other kind of wildlife that is likely to face
extinction in its natural habitat. Polar bears had already been categorized as a "threatened" species which the
ESA defines as one that is likely to become "endangered" in the foreseeable future.

The polar bear is the first animal that has been classified as endangered due primarily to global warming. Global
warming is a form of climate change caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases
that become trapped in the atmosphere. Oil and gas heaters, engines using oil or petrol (or gasoline) and coal-
powered electricity plants all require fossil fuels that lead to global warming. Renewable energy sources or
renewables that don't cause global warming include solar, wind and hydro-electricity power. These alternative
forms of power, as well as the science of climate change, have been strongly attacked by many of the world's
biggest companies in order to protect the huge profits they make from fossil fuels. They do this even though
they're fully aware of how much fossil fuels are damaging our planet and endangering many of the species we
share it with.
The polar bear's habitat is more vulnerable to global warming than many other species.
Polar bears live mainly on the sea ice in the Arctic. This is where they hunt for fish and
build up fat reserves. When the ice melts many polar bears move to land and live off their
stored fat. In the Arctic, global warming is causing the ice to melt slightly earlier and form
slightly later. This results in a shorter feeding season for the polar bear. Some risk their
lives to find ice. If they have to swim too far they will drown from exhaustion and hunger.
The World Wildlife Fund estimates that over 25% of Arctic sea ice has disappeared in the
past 30 years.

It is not only the polar bear that is at risk in the Arctic. Every species of plant, animal, and
insect there is threatened by global warming. Nevertheless, groups of concerned scientists
and environmentalists such as the World Wildlife Fund often study large carnivores in
order to assess the health of an ecosystem. The Arctic food chain relies on the polar bear. In
addition, donations are more commonly offered for the protection of large animals such as
bears or elephants. People in general are less interested in conservation efforts that protect
small wildlife, such as plants or insects. However, by using donor money to protect the
habitats of larger animals through reforestation and similar programs, entire ecosystems
with many threatened or endangered species can be saved.
