WHAT WE WILL LEARN

• Finds the area of a given circle

• Solves routine and non-routine problems
involving the area of a circle.
EXPLORE
You have learned from your previous lesson that the distance around the circle is
the circumference of the circle. On the other hand, the space covered by the
interior of the circle is referred to as the area of the circle.

The area of a circle with radius r is given by the formula:

Area = radius x radius x pi A=rxrx π or

6 = radius

12 = diameter
EXPLORE
Every time it rains, Mrs. Tamayo saves water in a big pail. She covers the pail
with a circular galvanized iron with a diameter of 12 decimeters. What is the area
of the circular cover of the pail?

Let us help Mrs. Tamayo determine the area of the circular galvanized iron cover
she used to cover the pail

Given that the length of the diameter of the circular galvanized iron cover is 12
decimeters (dm) therefore, the radius is 6 decimeters (dm).

12=dm 6=radius
SOLUTION

= 3.14(6dm
= 3.14(6dm)(6dm)
= 113.04dm²

12=dm 6=radius
EXAMPLE 1
Find the area of the circle below given its diameter. Use = 3.14 for your final answer.

Given: Solution:

d = 16cm
r = 8cm = 3.14(8cm
16cm
= 3.14 = 3.14(8cm)(8cm)
= 200.96cm²
EXAMPLE 2
Application and Problem Solving

Raver is sewing a circular table cloth for her TLE project.

She wants half of the table cloth to be made of plain colored
fabric and the other half to be made of printed fabric. If the
diameter of the table cloth is 10 feet, what will be the area of
the plain colored part?
Polya’s
4-Step Process
EXAMPLE 2
Use Polya’s 4-Step Process to solve the problem

Step 1: Understand

• What is asked in the problem?

The area of the plain colored part of the table cloth.

• What is/are the fact/s?

The diameter of the table cloth is 10 feet.

The table cloth is made of ½ plain colored and ½ printed fabric.
• What are the clue words?

Area, part
• What is/are the hidden question/s?

What is the area of the table cloth?

What is the area of the printed part of the table cloth?
EXAMPLE 2
Step 2: Device a Plan

• What are the operations to be used?

Multiplication, division
• What is the number sentence?

Since the table cloth is half made of plain colored fabric and half of printed
fabric, the area of the plain colored fabric part of the table cloth is one half
of the area of the circular table cloth.
EXAMPLE 2
Step 3: Solve
Given: Area of the plain-colored part:

d = 10ft =
r = 5ft
= 3.14

Solution:

Area of the cloth

EXAMPLE 2
Step 4: Check
. Area of the printed part Area of the plain-colored part

= =

Area of the table cloth

A= +
A = 78.5

Since the table cloth is half made of plain colored fabric and half of printed
fabric, the area of the circular table cloth is 78.5 ft2
