BASIC APPARATUS AND

EQUIPMENT IN
MICROBIOLOGY
Presented by: Tom Anthony A. Tonguia, RMT
Objectives

 Identify the different equipment and apparatus used in the bacteriology

laboratory;
 Describe the functions and uses of each equipment; and
 Illustrate the different materials and apparatus.
Introduction

 Microbiology utilizes many different laboratory apparatus and equipment.

 Microbiological studies and experiments employ such techniques as sterilization,
isolation of bacteria, culture media preparation, and biochemical testing among
others.
Microbiological Incubator

 Designed for the cultivation of microorganism cultures contained in Petri dishes,

flasks, or test tubes, or other glassware or disposable plastic ware under
controlled conditions of temperature, moisture and gas content.
Petri Dish

 Used to culture microorganisms in solid media

Test Tubes or Flasks

 Flasks or test tubes are used to culture microorganisms in liquid medium.

 Test tubes are also used for containing aqueous chemical reactions and
observations such as biochemical tests.
 Flasks such as the Erlenmeyer flask are also used to mix liquids together and may
be heated as well as to facilitate mixing.
 They are often used in the preparation of culture media.
Hot Plate

 It is used for general heating and mixing.

 It serves to provide even heating and is often equipped with a magnetic stirring
function.
 A magnet coated in plastic is placed in the mixture and the stirrer function is
activated which creates a varying magnetic field causing the magnet to spin
resulting in the mixing of the fluid being heated.
Water Steam Bath

 It is used to heat liquids and solutions.

 This is utilized most often when the solution being heated may burn easily or
there is a need for slow heating.
 The same instrument may also be used in conducting controlled temperature
experiments that may be required in biochemical testing in place of an incubator.
 This instrument may also be used for sterilization.
Autoclave

 It is indispensable equipment for sterilization.

 Of all sterilization methods, high pressure steam is most widely used because of
its efficiency, speed, and reliability.
 This method is suitable for a wide range of media, glass, and metal implements,
and waste products.
 It provides a safe, reliable, high pressure steam sterilizing environment.
Laminar Flow Hood

 Simply known as the hood, is a closed chamber devise that reduces the risk of
bacterial contamination and assures that experiments are prepared in the most
aseptic manner.
 The hood is designed to prevent contamination to whatever one is handling or
experimenting on.
 It prevents contamination of cultures as microorganisms are being transferred.
 The laminar flow hood is one among many different types of hoods utilized in
laboratories.
