Introduction to Intonation
•Intonation is the rise and fall of pitch in our voice while speaking.
•It helps us convey different emotions, attitudes, and meanings in sentences.
•Intonation is crucial for effective communication.
The Two Main Intonation Patterns
1.Rising Intonation
• Pitch rises at the end of a sentence.
• Often used for questions, uncertainty, or when seeking information.

2.Falling Intonation
• Pitch falls at the end of a sentence.
• Used for statements, commands, or to express certainty.
The rules of both types of intonation
Rules of Rising Intonation
•Use rising intonation for YES/NO questions (e.g., Are you coming?)
•Use rising intonation for WH-questions (e.g., What is your name?)
•Use rising intonation for lists (e.g., I like apples, bananas, and oranges?)
Example Sentences Rising Intonation:
1.Are you going to the park?
2.What is your favorite color?
3.Did you see the movie?
Rules of Falling Intonation
•Use falling intonation for statements (e.g., I am going to the store.)
•Use falling intonation for commands (e.g., Close the door.)
•Use falling intonation for expressing certainty (e.g., The sun rises in the east.)
Example Sentences Falling Intonation:
1.I went to the zoo yesterday.
2.Please turn off the lights.
3.She is a doctor
An example dialogue to practise the intonation patterns with students
(Students can act out this dialogue in pairs, practicing the appropriate intonation.)
Student A: Hi, how was your weekend?
Student B: It was great! I visited the beach with my family.
Student A: Oh, that sounds fun! Did you go swimming?
Student B: Yes, we did. The water was warm and clear.
Student A: Awesome! What else did you do?
Student B: We played beach volleyball and built sandcastles.
Student A: Nice! I wish I could have joined you.
