QUARTER 3 WEEK 5 DAY 2

PRECIE D. CABERTE
TAMBONGAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Demonstrates understanding of sequence in
forming rules, expressions and equations.

Apply knowledge of sequence, expressions,

and equations in mathematical problems and
real-life situations.

Gives the translation of real-life verbal expressions and equations into

letters or symbols and vice versa. M6AL-IIIe-16
defines a variable in an algebraic expression and equation. M6AL-IIIe-17
represents quantities in real-life situations using algebraic expressions and
equations.

DRILL
Tell the operation

1.The cafeteria bought lots of frozen pizzas to serve. If

you know the total amount of money
they spent and how many pizzas they bought, how
could you figure out the cost of 1 pizza?
Why do you believe that? What is the action of this
operation?

Division
2.)Pete bought some candy and gave some of
the pieces to his best friend, Hal. How could
you figure out how many pieces Pete has left?
Why do you believe this? What is the action of
the operation?

Subtraction
3. Bob and Tyler do not have enough money to
buy a box of donuts, but they have the exact
amount needed if they combine their money.
How would you find the cost of a box of
donuts? What is the action of this operation?

Addition
4.Macy wants to buy each of her
classmates a Coke. How would you figure
out the cost? What is the action of this
operation?

Multiplication
MOTIVATION

What expression describes

President Rodrigo Duterte?
If we use expressions to
describe our President, we
also use expressions in
Mathematics, to describe
relationships between
numbers and the operations
being used.
PRESENTATION

What is numerical expression?

is an expression that combines numbers and one or
more operation symbols

What is variable?
is any letter or symbl that represents
a number
ex. “some number”
This lesson is to translate written words to
numbers, operational symbols, and
variables.
Example
A. Given "some number increased
by 5“
What action is happening in this
phrase?
(We are making larger, joining to,
adding to).
What operation indicates this action?

(Answer: Addition) x + 5
B. "51 less than some number."
What action is happening in this phrase?
(Answer: We are decreasing, going down,
subtracting).
What operation indicates this action?
(Answer: Subtraction) x - 51; taking away
from the x.
C. Sum of 12 and e.

Answer: 12 + e
DISCUSSION

Group Activity:
Translate each phrase or sentence into a
mathematical expression or equation.
1.Twelve more than a number. 1. 12 + X
2.Eight minus a number. 2. 8–X
3.An unknown quantity less 3. X – 14
fourteen. 4. 6X = 54
4.Six times a number is fifty- 5. 2/9X=11
four.
5.Two ninths of a number is
eleven.
6.Three more than
seven times a number 6. 3+7x=9+5x
is nine more than five
7. 2x−8=3x+1
times the number.
or 2x−8=1+3x
7.Twice a number less
eight is equal to one
more than three times
the number.
Ex. 4 A kite is flying at an altitude of m meters
a. Algebraic expression:

m meters increased by 25
m + 25
Algebraic expression: m + 25
b. Express algebraically its new altitude after
falling 10 meters.

m meters diminished by 10

m - 10

Algebraic expression : m - 10
c. Represent algebraically its new altitude
after tripling its altitude.

3 multiplied by m meters

3 x m

Algebraic expression: 3 X m or 3m or 3 . M
or (3) (m)
Example 5. express the number of weeks in
terms of y days.

1 week = 7 days

y days divided by 7
y ÷ 7

Algebraic expression: y ÷ 7 or y/7

MASTERY

Group Activity: Translate algebraic

Translate in algebraic symbols. symbols into
1.)twice a number a divided by mathematical
three statement.
2.)five times a number x minus 5.)5x + 2y
four
3.)Thrice the sum of a number x
and six
4.) A number x is divided by two
added to seven
ans 1. or 2a ÷ 3
we 2. 5x – 4
rs
3. 3 (x + 6)
4. 7 + x / 2
or 7 + x ÷ 2
5. the product of five X added to the product of
two and y
the sum of five times x and two times y
five times x increased by twice y
twice and more than five times x
APPLICATION
Pair-Share

2. Translate in algebraic symbols.

1. Translate a.eight times a number x increased
into verbal by three.
phrases. b.five times a number n added to
six.
a.)3x - 4 c.fifteen added to the quotient of a
b.)n + 8 number y and two.
c.)2 / x + y d.twenty four multiplied by the
d.)5y - 2 sum of x and y.
e.the sum of the number n and
e.)2x + 3 seven multiplied by two.
GENERALIZATION

What is an algebraic expression?

How do you translate real-life verbal
expressions and equations into letters or
symbols and vice versa?
You need to read very carefully using context
clues to determine what action is required.
They will need to reread some problems in
order to focus on the needed information.
