Business Intelligence

 Definition of Business Intelligence

 [Broad Definition] An umbrella term that combines
architectures, tools, databases, analytical tools, applications,
and methodologies
 [Narrow Definition] Descriptive analytics tools and techniques
(i.e., reporting tools)
 BI’s major objective is to enable interactive access (sometimes in
real time) to data, to enable manipulation of data, and to give
business managers and analysts the ability to conduct appropriate
analyses.
 The process of BI is based on the transformation of data to
information, then to decisions, and finally to actions 5
A Framework for Business
Intelligence

6
Components of BI

 A BI system has four major components:

 DW, with its source data;
 Business Analytics, a collection of tools for manipulating,
mining, and analyzing the data in the DW;
 BPM for monitoring and analyzing performance; and
 User interface (e.g., a dashboard).
 The relationship among these components is illustrated in
Figure

8
Data Warehouse

A data warehouse is a special database where all the useful

information is stored in one location for easy access.

A data mart is essentially the same as a data warehouse, but

with more specific information of predetermined select data.

Makes for more efficient data analysis and reporting

Data Warehouse

10
Business Analytics
 Business Analytics, a collection of tools for manipulating, mining,
and analyzing the data in the DW
 For Example:
 Descriptive Analysis
 Visualization
 Customized Reporting

11
Business Performance
Management (BPM)
• BPM for monitoring and analyzing performance
• BPM is a set of processes that help organizations optimize
business performance.
• BPM is focused on business processes such as planning
and forecasting.
• It helps businesses discover efficient use of their business
units, financial, human, and material resources.

12
User interface

 User interface, commonly abbreviated as UI, describes the

way a user accesses and interacts with a system.
 User interface could be:
 Browser
 Portal
 Dashboard

13
A High-Level Architecture of
BI.

Managers need the right information at the right

time and in the right place.
Mantra for modern approaches to BI.
14
BI Process

15
BI Process

• Collection of data: The first step is related to the

collection of relevant data from various external and
internal sources which can be databases, ERP- or CRM
systems, flat files, or APIs, just to name a few.
• Data integration: At this stage, the data collected is
integrated into a centralized system, often with the help of
ETL processes. Here the data is also cleaned and prepared
for analysis.
16
BI Process

• Storage of data: This is where data warehousing comes

into the picture. A warehouse is a place in which structured
data is stored. It makes it available for querying and
analysis.
• Data analysis: After the information is processed, stored,
and cleaned it is ready to be analyzed. With the help of the
right tools, the data is visualized and used for strategic
decision-making.
17
BI Process

• Distribution of data: The data, now in the form of

graphs and charts, is distributed in different formats. This
can be online reporting, dashboarding, or embedding
solutions.
• Reaction based on insights: The final stage of the
architecture process is to extract actionable insights from
the data and use them to make improved decisions to
ensure company growth.

19
Benefits of BI
 The benefits of Business intelligence are as follows:
 BI is faster more accurate process of reporting critical information.
 BI facilitates better and efficient decision-making process.
 BI provides timely information for better customer relationship
management.
 BI improves profitability of the company.
 BI provides a facility of assessing organization’s readiness in
meeting new business challenges.
 BI supports usage of best practices and identifies every hidden cost.
