CRT, Led, LCD

This document summarizes four major display technologies: CRT, LCD, LED, and plasma. CRTs were the standard for decades but are bulky and consume more power. LCDs replaced CRTs due to being more compact and energy efficient, but have limited viewing angles. LED displays are a refinement of LCDs with improved brightness, contrast, and energy efficiency. Plasma displays were popular for large screens but are bulky and can experience burn-in issues.

Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) Monitors

CRTs were the standard display technology for decades.

A cathode-ray tube (CRT) is a specialized vacuum tube in which images are produced when an
electron beam strikes a phosphorescent surface.
CRTs have the longest lifespan, followed by LED and LCD displays.
Functionality: Utilizes an electron gun to shoot electrons onto a phosphorescent screen creating images.

Pros: Good color reproduction, wide viewing angles, and low input lag.
Cons: Bulky, heavy, consume more power, and limited screen sizes.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)

• LCDs replaced CRTs due to their compactness and energy efficiency.

• Functionality: Uses liquid crystals to block or pass light, creating images when an electric current
is applied.
• LCD are more energy-efficient and better suited for brightly lit rooms.
• Pros: Slim design, energy-efficient, and available in various sizes.
• Cons: Limited viewing angles, slower response times, and not the best for dark room viewing.

LED(Light Emitting Diode)

• LEDs are a refinement of LCD technology, with added benefits.

• Functionality: Similar to LCDs, but use LED backlighting instead of CCFL (Cold Cathode
Fluorescent Lamp).
• LED are more energy-efficient and better suited for brightly lit rooms.
• LED being the most popular choice for its superior energy efficiency and image quality.
• Pros: Improved brightness, contrast, and energy efficiency.
• Cons: Still suffers from limited viewing angles and response times compared to other technologies.

Plasma

• Plasma displays were popular for large-sized screens before the rise of LED TVs.
• Functionality: Use a matrix of tiny gas-filled cells to emit ultraviolet light, which illuminates
phosphors and creates images.
• Plasma displays are susceptible to burn-in, where images can become permanently imprinted on
the screen with prolonged static display.
• Pros: Excellent color reproduction, high contrast ratios, and good for dark room viewing.
• Cons: Bulkier than other modern options, susceptible to "burn-in" issues, and higher power
consumption.
